Call for Immigrant-Rights Rally at DNC

At two and half years since the nation’s social movement gained prominence through the massive expression of the immigrant rights mega marches in hundreds of cities, the political conditions are maturing once again for us to take the offensive and as in 1986, accomplish today, the epic historical task of empowering the millions of undocumented immigrants in this country. Our people.

And as with the IRCA Amnesty Law of 1986, this time, the final stages are being played out through a national presidential campaign. It is in this spirit that the “We Are America Alliance” is calling on the nation’s immigrant rights forces and its allies to massively march in Denver during the National Democratic Convention to send an unequivocal message and influence the Democratic Party leadership, the convention delegates, the Latino Establishment and of course Barack Obama. Obama has already stated publicly that he will use his executive powers to stop the raids in the country.

We believe a national march will also complement and further energize the moves being made now by many of our organizations for a record vote against the Republicans in November.

Companer@s if all goes as envisioned and the right gets trounced significantly in November, after the elections, its troops and organizations will be in disarray, spiritless and demoralized and their leadership will be discredited. By then, the immigrant rights movement will have taken the offensive. In this context, the next May 1st 2009 national mass action becomes key in the potential victory for an inclusive and humane legalization program for the 13 million plus undocumented immigrants, their 4 million US born children and the estimated 2 million US citizens married to undocumented spouses.

On March 25, 2006 125,000 people marched in Denver against HR4437. Today, we invite you and your organizations in the country to march with us in on August 28, 2008. We ask you to endorse and play an active part in the building of this demonstration. Remember, that the last battle of our movement as a whole will more likely be against the extreme right. We need to be ready and with your help we can do it.
