Fort Hood Shooting Suspect Harassed By Others In Military and Wanted Out, Family Said

Fort Hood shooting suspect, Major Nidal Malik Hasan, wanted out of the Army after being constantly harassed by others in the military and was called a “camel jockey,” his family said.
As Hasan was about to be deployed to Iraq, he was suffering from some of the same stresses that he was trained as an Army psychiatrist to treat.
Although the 39-year-old had just been promoted to major in May, his family says he had hired a lawyer to help him get out of the Armed Forces.
“Apparently became very disgruntled in the mission in Iraq and Afghanistan and voiced that to a lot of his colleagues,” said Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX).
He also voiced it to the world in an Internet posting, where he compared suicide bombers to GI’s who save their colleagues by throwing themselves on a grenade.
“Just keep in mind mass killers pretty much know they want to die and they tend to take as many people with them as they can in a shooting,” said former FBI agent and ABC News consultant Brad Garrett, who also believes Hasan didn’t want to survive the Ft. Hood shooting.
“It is one of those things where he went and wanted to kill a lot of people and commit suicide maybe in his own mind that he’s saving peoples’ lives,” said Garrett. “As illogical as that sounds, in his mind, that would be quite logical.”
Hasan is an American citizen of Palestinian descent and after the 9/11 attacks, his cousin says he was the target of constant harassment from others in the military. His tormentors called him a “camel jockey,” said his cousin, Nader Hasan. He wanted out of the Army, so he paid back his military student loans and hired an attorney.
While the bullying irritated Hasan, Nader Hasan believes his upcoming deployment is what set him off. The cousin said, “My mom is his mom… and we didn’t know he was being deployed until we heard it on the news today.”
Hasan went to college at Virginia Tech and studied medicine at the military’s medical school.
A Silver Spring, MD neighbor told ABC News she was interviewed Thursday by the FBI about Hasan.
“He’s a quiet man, he looked like a nice person to me, so since I have been living here I never heard a noise in that house,” said Vivian Tchangan, who added that Hasan wrote “Allah” on his door.
A devout Muslim, Hasan described himself as reserved and funny in an application for a Muslim marriage matchmaking program run by Imam Faizul Khan or the Islamic Society of Washington Area.
Khan told ABC News Hasan was looking for an equally devout wife. He said, “He wants someone who prays everyday, who adheres to the Quran, who is a good muslim woman.”
According to military records, Hasan worked as a psychiatrist at the Walter Reed military hospital for six years until this July. Congressman McCaul says Hasan had a poor performance evaluation at Walter Reed, which resulted in his transfer to Ft. Hood and “while there received a lot of advanced training in weapons, shooting classes.”

Seattle police officer killed; search on for shooter

SEATTLE – A Seattle police officer was shot to death and another officer was wounded late Saturday night as they were sitting inside their patrol car in the city’s Central District neighborhood.
The officer who died was a veteran of the department, and the woman who was wounded is a student officer in training, Assistant Police Chief Jim Pugel said.
The two were parked in their patrol car near the intersection of 29th Avenue and East Yesler Way just after 10 p.m. when another vehicle pulled up alongside and someone opened fire on the officers.

The training officer, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, was hit several times and died at the scene. His name has not been released.
The student officer, who was in the driver’s seat, received minor injuries. She was able to get out of the patrol car, return fire several times at the shooter’s fleeing vehicle, and call for additional units.
Officers from all precincts responded, as well as homicide detectives and the crime scene investigations unit. Officers scoured the neighborhood for the gunman, but no arrests have been made.
The student officer was rushed to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where she is expected to recover.
A man who lived nearby said he heard eight to ten shots fired, then another volley of about six shots.
The witness said the shots came in rapid-fire succession, like an automatic or semi-automatic weapon. But investigators said they haven’t yet determined what type of firearm was used.
Pugel called the act a “deliberate homicide” and vowed to hunt down whoever is responsible.
“The officers are very upset. This is highly unusual. This is an attack, not only on police officers, but on society as a whole,” he said.
Investigators have been at the scene all night collecting evidence, and fellow officers lined Yesler Way as the fallen officer’s body was driven to the King County Medical Examiner’s office just before 3 a.m.
Police are looking for a car described as a light-colored sedan that drove away from the shooting scene, but no detailed description of the vehicle or suspected shooter was available.
Police aren’t sure if the shooter’s car was hit by the student officer as she returned fire.
This investigation is very much active and ongoing, and is a priority for the Seattle Police Department, officials said.
Information is limited at this time, as it is still early in the investigation. More information is expected to be released Sunday afternoon, said a police spokesman.
The killing is the first line-of-duty death for the department since Officer Joselito Barber was fatally injured in a 2006 crash by a woman who was high on cocaine.

California: Community Shuts Down Nazi Rally

ALERT: Update 12:30pm 9/26/09: A contingent of close to 100 activists, including Mecha, Brown Berets, local anarchists and day labors successfully broke up the rally. Activists surrounded the Nazis and attempted to seize their Nazi flags and burn them. Nazis were forced to retreat under the protection of a police escort. No arrests or injuries have been reported. Anti-fascist activists are now headed to a location believed to be the Nazis headquarters.

Varios países del mundo marcharon este sábado a favor de los Cinco luchadores antiterroristas cubanos que se encuentran detenidos en cárceles estadounidenses desde hace más de una década, para exigirle a Washington su inmediata liberación.
Gerardo Hernández, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González, Ramón Labañino y René González, fueron arrestados hace 11 años.
La Organización Movimiento de Solidaridad con Cuba en los países latinoamericanos, caribeños y europeos organizaron diferentes actividades sociales y culturales por la excarcelación de los Cinco luchadores.
En la capital de Venezuela, Caracas, miles de ciudadanos, entre ellos dirigentes políticos, sociales y estudiantes se movilizaron en el centro de la ciudad (Parque Carabobo hasta la Plaza Bolívar), así como en otros puntos del país, para apoyar a los ciudadanos caribeños.
El representante del Movimiento de Amistad y Solidaridad Mutua Venezuela-Cuba, Basem Tajeldine, recordó este sábado los 11 años de prisión a que fueron sometidos los Cinco cubanos.
LOS JOVENES SE MOVILIZAN
Por su parte, la Unión de Jóvenes Comunistas y el Comité Internacional por la Libertad de los Cinco, convocaron a distintas organizaciones juveniles, asociaciones y personas con sentido de justicia del mundo, a luchar por la verdad y así terminar con el silencio que envolvió este caso.
Asimismo, los embajadores en Rusia de los países de la Alianza Bolivariana para los Pueblos de Nuestra América (Alba) emitieron una declaración para la prensa, en la cual exigieron la inmediata liberación de los Cinco.
“Los embajadores del Alba en la Federación Rusa manifiestan su enérgica denuncia al injusto confinamiento de cinco ciudadanos cubanos que lucharon contra la organización de actividades terroristas desde el territorio de Estados Unidos”, señaló la declaración.
Por otro lado, el Comité Internacional por la Libertad de los Cinco, con sede en Estados Unidos, convocó a una jornada global de solidaridad.
Igualmente, el Comité Argentino por la Libertad de Los Cinco y el Movimiento Argentino de Solidaridad con Cuba, realizaron una velada frente a la embajada de Estados Unidos en ese país, por la libertad de los condenados en Miami.
URUGUAY
En la ciudad de Montevideo, Uruguay se realizó una marcha en la principal avenida de la capital, para expresar su rechazo a la injusta prisión de estos hombres. Esta movilización estuvo organizada por la Coordinadora Uruguay por la Libertad de los Cinco.
“Nosotros estamos leyendo aquí la proclama en la Plaza Liobertad que es un lugar simbólico y el día lunes estaremos presentando esta proclama que se está leyendo, dirigida a Barack Obama y que entregaremos en la Embajada de Estados Unidos para exigir la inmediata liberación de estos compañeros”, leyó uno de los manifestantes.
Asimismo, mostraron su agradecimiento al pueblo cubano y dijeron que Cuba es uno de los países que los ayudó en momentos difíciles.
“Lo menos que tenemos que hacer como integrantes del colectivo es dar un aporte a estos compañeros y más a los Cinco cubanos que están presos injustamente en la cárcel yanqui”, expresaron.
Conocidos como “los Cinco”, fueron apresados por proveer información no confidencial al gobierno de La Habana sobre las actividades terroristas de grupos anticubanos al sur de Florida, luego de que Cuba informara a Washington sobre estas actividades, razón por la el Gobierno de EE.UU. decidió arrestarlos.
MÁS PAÍSES
Este sábado también se realizaron acciones solidarias en Bolivia, Suecia, Ucrania, Perú, Italia, Guinea Ecuatorial, Estados Unidos, Bélgica, Líbano y España.
Luego de un fallo de la Corte de Apelaciones de Atlanta, quedó claro que los Cinco no cometieron el supuesto delito de conspiración para cometer espionaje del cual se les acusó, ni se apropiaron ni entregaron secretos del gobierno de Estados Unidos.
No obstante, la determinación judicial, sólo le eliminó ese cargo a Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González, René González, tras admitir que fue un error sancionar en función de un delito que no cometieron.
Al comprobarse la inocencia, La Corte ordenó al Tribunal Distrital de Miami dictarles una nueva sentencia, pero indicó que no se aplica la misma decisión para Gerardo Hernández y Ramón Labañino.
El 13 de octubre de 2009 serán resentenciados tres de los Cinco, según se conoció en informaciones difundidas en el programa cubano, Mesa Redonda.
Al respecto, Thomas Goldstein, del equipo de abogados defensores, explicó que el grupo ya se prepara para el proceso

Más de 50 activistas del Comité Nacional Ucraniano “Por la libertad de Los Cinco Héroes Cubanos” se dieron cita hoy desde tempranas horas de la mañana, frente a la sede diplomática del gobierno de Estados Unidos en este país, para manisfestar su protesta por los 11 años de injusto encarcelamiento de Los Cinco.
La actividad se desarrolló en una ferviente combinación de conocidas canciones cubanas, combativos discursos pronunciados por 8 de los activistas presentes, y consignas de Libertad para Los 5, en ruso, ucraniano e inglés.
Paralelamente se distribuyeron octavillas entre los transeuntes con información sobre el caso de Los Cinco y reflexiones del compañero Fidel.
Todos los presentes firmaron la carta de exigencia remitida al presidente de EU, la cual fue leida públicamente y seguidamente entregada a los funcionarios de la embajada norteamericana.
El mitin finalizó oyendo a todo volumen las notas del Himno Nacional Cubano, y la resuelta convicción de todos los amigos de la Revolución Cubana en Ucrania no cesarán de manifestar su protesta, hasta tanto los Cinco antiterroristas cubanos no sean puestos en libertad.

Realizada el 12 de septiembre de 2009, con concentración en la Plaza Carabobo, siguió la ruta por la Av. Universidad del centro de Caracas y finalizó en la Plaza Bolívar, con una Tribuna Antiimperialista.

On September 13th, one day after the 11th anniversary of the Cuban Five’s unlawful imprisonment, A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition activists and members of the PSL in Boston attended the Cambridge Caribbean Festival in an effort to raise awareness about the case of the Five. A day of
outreach and visibility for the Five was canceled the previous day due to the weather.
An informational table was set up alongside other vendors at the Festival with variety of literature on the Five, including information the recent Freedom of Information lawsuit filed by the Partnership for Civil Justice and the National Committee to Free the Cuban Five, as
well as a leaflet on U.S-C.I.A. terrorist Luis Posada Carriles. Over a thousand leaflets were handed out over the course of a couple of hours and many people signed the petition to President Obama demanding the immediate release of the Five
Activists encountered people from all over the greater Boston area excited to sign the petition and interested in learning more on the case – many of whom becoming quickly enraged with the U.S. government after hearing what had occurred and continue to occur to these courageous men and the Cuban people. A significant percentage of the crowd, which numbered well over several thousand, left with a flyer and a greater understanding of the legal case. It was a very successful outing in getting the word out on the injustices that have taken place against the Cuban Five, and efforts will continue in the Boston area to increase awareness and support for the five heroes.

En los días sucesivos al desfile de carros que ha manifestado por el centro histórico de la ciudad de Roma para pedir la liberación de los Cinco cubanos prisioneros desde hace 11 años en las cárceles estadounidenses, los militares de la Asociación Italia-Cuba del Lazio han distribuido folletos en varios lugares de la ciudad eterna y en particular en las zonas de mayor flujo de personas como las estaciones del metro y la universidad de La Sapienza de Roma. Al lado del camión vela que ha circulado en toda la ciudad, han sido distribuidos miles de folletos cuyo texto recordaba la injusta detención de los Cinco ciudadanos cubanos en las prisiones EE.UU.

Thousands march for liberation of ‘Cuban Five,’ men arrested 11 years ago of spying in US
Sept. 12, 2009 HAVANA (AP) — Thousands of Cuban demonstrators are calling for the liberation of five men arrested 11 years ago for spying in the U.S. Protest leader and painter Alexis Leyva Machado wants President Barack Obama to free the men because he said “they are anti-terrorism heroes, not villains.” The so-called “Cuban Five” were convicted in Miami, Florida, in 2001 of being unregistered foreign agents. Cuban officials say the men were heroes trying to avert terrorist attacks on the island and maintain they didn’t receive a fair trial because of strong sentiment in Miami against former Cuban President Fidel Castro. Three will be resentenced in October. The demonstrators began their vigil at midnight Friday and protested throughout the morning Saturday in front of the U.S. mission in Havana. |
Cubanos demandan a EEUU liberación cinco agentes
por Andrea Rodriguez LA HABANA — Dirigentes, estudiantes, trabajadores y familiares de cinco agentes de inteligencia cubana presos en Estados Unidos se dieron cita frente a la sede diplomática de Washington en esta capital para exigir su liberación. “Hacemos y seguiremos haciendo, sin desmayar hasta que cumplamos nuestro objetivo, un llamado a la atención al mundo… Exigimos a Barack Obama la puesta en libertad de nuestros compatriotas. Es hora de que sepa que son héroes antiterroristas y no villanos”, dijo el pintor Alexis Leyva Machado. El pintor, conocido como “Kcho”, abrió una vigilia que comenzó en la medianoche del viernes y se prolongó a la mañana del sábado. Este 12 de septiembre se cumplen 11 años del arresto de Ramón Labañino, Gerardo Hernández, Antonio Guerrero, René González y Fernando González -sin parentesco con el primero-, conocidos mundialmente como “los cinco”. Desde la medianoche del viernes y luego de cantar el himno nacional miles de cubanos fueron pasando por el “Monte de las Banderas”, una tribuna ubicada frente a la oficina de Intereses de Estados Unidos en esta capital en protesta y reclamo de liberación de sus compatriotas. Entre los asistentes estuvo el líder parlamentario, Ricardo Alarcón. La actividad coincidió con muchos otros mítines en diferentes ciudades del mundo, donde hay activas campañas a favor de “los cinco”. Todos fueron encontrados culpables en Miami por delitos relacionados con espionaje. Las autoridades cubanas los reconocieron como agentes suyos aunque dijeron que su misión no estaba relacionada con Estados Unidos como tal, sino que era recopilar información sobre los grupos de exiliados extremistas que se nucléan en La Florida. Labañino fue condenado a prisión perpetua más 18 años; Fernando González a 19 años; Hernández a dos cadenas perpetuas; Guerrero a perpetua más 10 años y René González a 15 años. En 2008, la Corte de Apelaciones de Atlanta consideró que deben revisarse algunas sanciones pues estas quedaron desproporcionadas en los casos de Labañino, Guerrero y Fernando González y dado que solo se trató de agentes que no se inscribieron en el país pero que nunca intentaron obtener secretos de estado. Estos tres hombres se encuentran ahora otra vez en La Florida para su resentencia que se producirá posiblemente en octubre. Sin embargo, Atlanta dejó intactas las penas dispuestas para René González y Hernández. La defensa de los cubanos, sus familiares y hasta las autoridades de la isla -que los califica de héroes- alegan además que La Florida no es buen sitio para dictarles justicia pues los jurados son presionables debido a la influencia anticastrista. Seguiremos en lucha por los Cinco, ¡aquí no se rinde nadie!
por Deisy Francis Mexidor Con un minuto de silencio a la memoria del eterno Comandante de la Revolución Juan Almeida Bosque, se inició este 12 de septiembre, en el Monte de las Banderas de la capital cubana la velada patriótica y revolucionaria en reclamo de ¡libertad ya! para los Cinco antiterroristas cubanos que cumplen 11 años de cruel e injusto cautiverio, en cárceles de Estados Unidos. La velada dio continuidad a la vigilia iniciada en la propia explanada a las 12 de la noche, por una valiosa representación de nuestros artistas plásticos, quienes, en gesto de reafirmación y compromiso con esta causa, dejaron plasmada su obra en cinco lienzos en forma de estrellas. Durante la ceremonia se escucharon poemas y canciones, entre ellas adquirieron una connotación mayor La Lupe, que es ya como un himno de la revolución, y Este día de Enero, ambas del entrañable comandante Almeida, autor de casi 300 piezas musicales. Al resumir la ceremonia, Ricardo Alarcón, miembro del Buró Político y presidente de la Asamblea Nacional del Poder Popular, parafraseó una histórica frase de Almeida y sentenció que “a pesar del chantaje los Cinco dijeron: ‘¡Aquí no se rinde nadie!’” Alarcón se refirió a las constantes violaciones de sus derechos a que son sometidos los Cinco y puso especial énfasis en el caso de Gerardo Hernández, al que “hace cuatro meses no le llega ni una carta, ninguna comunicación postal. Llevamos meses denunciándolo antes las autoridades norteamericanas”. Igualmente ratificó su condena a aquellos periodistas que fueron pagados con “un jugoso cheque” por el gobierno de Estados Unidos para difundir propaganda contraria al caso, “el mismo gobierno que llevó a nuestros compañeros a prisión”, puntualizó y señaló que respeto a este asunto lo que ha salido es “hasta ahora la punta del iceberg”. En otro momento de su intervención el Presidente del Parlamento comentó que pese a que el gobierno norteamericano da este como un caso cerrado “nosotros venimos hoy aquí para marcar esta fecha, pero sobre todo marcar un compromiso. Nosotros no creemos en caso cerrado” y dijo que lo abriremos con cuanto recurso esté en nuestras manos. Precisó asimismo, que “la vigilia terminará solo cuando los Cinco estén entre nosotros” y ratificó que no se trata de que ellos volverán “sino que los vamos a hacer volver”. Ricardo Alarcón reiteró el mensaje al presidente de EE.UU., Barack Obama, “como hombre decente que es” y “con todo el respecto que merece” de que “tiene la autoridad, la capacidad para hacer justicia”. Usted puede, usted debe liberar a los Cinco, enfatizó. Finalmente instó a que “sigamos en esta pelea, porque ¡aquí —apostilló—no se rinde nadie!” Al acto en el Monte de las Banderas asistieron los también miembros del Buró Político Pedro Sáez, primer secretario del Partido en Ciudad de La Habana, y Abel Prieto, ministro de Cultura, así como dirigentes de las organizaciones políticas y de masas, miembros del comité de las víctimas del terrorismo, familiares de los Cinco, personalidades, jóvenes y pobladores de de la capital. PREMIACIÓN DEL CONCURSO DEFENDIENDO LA PAZ En esta propia jornada del 12 de septiembre se efectuó la premiación del Concurso Internacional de Dibujo Defendiendo la Paz, dedicado a los Cinco, en el que fueron premiados y reconocidos 58 trabajos. Organizado por el Comité Internacional por la Libertad de los Cinco, el Museo Abel Santamaría y el taller de dibujo Coloreando mi barrio, el certamen recibió 600 obras provenientes de siete países, de niños y adolescentes en las manifestaciones de artes plásticas y literatura. Esta es la segunda edición del Concurso, cuya primera presentación fue en el 2007. Iniciativa que, al decir de Graciela Ramírez, coordinadora del Comité Internacional por la Libertad de los Cinco, “es una llamado desde la ternura y la inocencia” a que se ponga fin a la colosal injusticia. |
