Machetero POW Pleads Guilty

HARTFORD, Conn.— A Puerto Rican nationalist has pleaded guilty to federal charges related to his involvement in a 1983 armored truck robbery of about $7 million in Connecticut _ one of the largest robberies in American history.

Federal prosecutors said Friday that 67-year-old Avelino Gonzalez-Claudio pleaded guilty in Hartford to foreign transportation of stolen money and conspiracy to rob federally insured bank funds.

Gonzalez-Claudio conspired with others to rob the Wells Fargo Armored Service Corp. in West Hartford and to transport the stolen money to Mexico, authorities said.

Authorities allege the robbery was committed to fund the activities of Los Macheteros, a clandestine organization that seeks Puerto Rican independence.

Gonzalez-Claudio was a fugitive for more than 22 years before he was arrested in 2008 in Puerto Rico, where he had been living under an assumed name. He faces up to 15 years in prison when he is sentenced May 26. A plea agreement, subject to court approval, calls for a seven-year sentence.

“It’s a very fair and I would say favorable resolution,” Gonzalez-Claudio’s attorney, James Bergenn, said Friday.

Bergenn has said his client’s membership in the Macheteros was not a crime and accused prosecutors of making unsubstantiated claims about him.

The Macheteros, whose name translates as “Machete Wielders” or “Cane Cutters,” are suspected of using the stolen millions to finance bombings and attacks designed to promote independence for the U.S. territory.

Their alleged leader, Filiberto Ojeda Rios, was killed in a 2005 shootout with the FBI at a remote farmhouse in Puerto Rico.

The robbery was allegedly carried out by Victor Gerena, a Wells Fargo driver recruited by the independence group. Authorities say Gerena took two co-workers hostage at gunpoint, handcuffed them and injected them with an unknown substance to disable them.

Gonzalez is accused of helping to get Gerena and the half-ton of cash out of the United States.

Two suspects, Gerena and Gonzalez-Claudio’s brother, Norberto Gonzalez-Claudio, remain at large, and Gerena is on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted list.

Host First Nations Bite the Olympic Hand

February 9, 2010
Will the government meet its funding obligations before the Games?

by ZOE BLUNT

Chief Bill Williams at Ut'sam, 2006. Williams and other leaders of the Four Host First Nations are demanding the federal government meet its financial obligations to the communities before the Olympic Games.

VANCOUVER—It looked like the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Committee had everything sewn up tight: new venues built to order, ads from corporate sponsors, bylaws against ambush marketing, and smiling Indigenous people welcoming the world.

Now, the committee must be wondering whether it misjudged its First Nations “partners.”

Hard on the heels of Indigenous protests during the Olympic Torch Relay, the Four Host First Nations (FHFN) surprised the province and its international partners with an announcement in January. Chief Bill Williams, chair of the FHFN, declared they will use the power of international media to shame the province into honouring its commitments to economic development.

Thomas Leonard, president of the BC First Nations Forestry Council, fired the first shot. In a letter to BC Forests Minister Pat Bell last December, he wrote, “The fact that your government and its federal partner are spending $3 billion to stage the Winter Olympics is merely exacerbating the frustration and anger felt by our communities as they continue to be told that there is no money in the pot to address their situations, which, as you are fully aware, are of a most desperate nature.”

Williams explained the consequences for ignoring the FHFN’s ultimatum. “There’s going to be some 14,000 media people running around [at the Olympics],” he told the Globe and Mail. “Some of them are already contacting us. They want to know, ‘What’s it like to be an Indian in today’s world? How do you live?’ We are going to start letting those reporters know the reality of the poverty we face.”

The host nations—the Squamish, Musqueam, Tsleil Waututh, and Lil’Wat Nation bands—signed partnership agreements with VANOC years ago, and until now, they’ve submitted to the demands of the international committee on everything from cutting old-growth forests to wearing faux regalia. Some, like Kwakwaka’wakw activist Gord Hill, have accused the FHFN of selling out, and cheaply.

Raising the price at this late date doesn’t make it right, and Hill calls the latest move an “attempted cash grab” by “native sell-outs.”

“What is truly hypocritical is for Williams to now raise the issue of Native poverty, or to express concerns about the social conditions for Native people, after several years collaborating with VANOC and the 2010 Olympics,” Hill told The Dominion.

Indeed, with the Olympic spectacle upon us, Indigenous leaders have upped the ante. Thomas said, “Our communities are tired of being told there is no new funding available—and that they might have to make do with even less than they already have—and at the same time being told they should be excited about the 2010 Winter Olympics.”

Thomas asked the province for an urgent meeting to resolve the issue, and said if steps aren’t taken, “The FNFC and its member first nations will reluctantly, but without hesitation, take advantage of the intense international media interest that will be focused on BC before and during the Winter Olympics.”

Along with his position as chair of the FHFN, Williams is vice-president of the BC First Nations Forestry Council. He said the province is overdue in funding $6.2 million for developing aboriginal forestry businesses. According to a press statement, similar commitments from Ottawa for $135 million for mountain pine beetle salvage and recovery were pledged years ago but never materialized. A second letter to Federal International Trade Minister Stockwell Day requested a meeting to discuss the long-overdue funding from Ottawa.

Hundreds of reserves across Canada are mired in abject poverty, and thousands make do without safe drinking water, housing, health care, employment and education. Conditions for Indigenous people have only deteriorated since Vancouver and Whistler won the Olympic bid, Hill said. “During this period, hundreds of Natives have been made homeless in Vancouver, subject to police violence and harassment; yet where were Mr. Williams, the Four Host First Nations and their Olympic toad Tewanee Joseph? Kissing the ass of corporations, government and Olympic officials,” he charged.

Investing in forestry is a delicate issue for the Squamish and other First Nations who have fought to preserve the forests of their traditional territory from industrial clearcutting. But in many parts of the coast, unprecedented liquidation of old-growth and second-growth forests is underway, and raw log exports are at an all-time high. Meanwhile, unsettled Indigenous land claims languish in limbo.

Growing nations are desperate for jobs and economic development, and this is the trade-off they face. The Olympics represent development, but at the expense of traditional lands, foods, and wildlife.

Today, neither the province nor the chiefs are speaking to the media—likely because they are attempting to negotiate a truce. The chiefs are certainly aware that when provincial and federal governments are confronted by intractable First Nations threatening action, they often give in to the demands. That’s how Indigenous activists have won substantial concessions in the past.

In this case, the FHFN demands are dwarfed by the scale of the Olympic money-pit. The province’s $6.2 million debt to First Nations forestry amounts to one-tenth of one per cent of Olympic spending. Ottawa’s contribution to pine-beetle salvage in First Nations communities would be a little over two per cent of the budget for the Games. Clearly, the host nations have the position and the leverage to negotiate sweeping changes. But what they stand to win by what some have called “selling out” appears to only be crumbs from the master’s table.

Celebrate Freedom With Me (Feb. 6 Statement by Leonard Peltier)

Sat, February 6, 2010

Greetings to everyone,

34 years. It doesn’t even sound like a real number to me. Not when one really thinks about being in a jail cell for that long. All these years and I swear, I still think sometimes I’ll wake up from this nightmare in my own bed, in my own home, with my family in the next room. I would never have imagined such a thing. Surely the only place people are unjustly imprisoned for 34 years is in far away lands, books or fairy tales.

It’s been that long since I woke up when I needed to, worked where I wanted to, loved who I was supposed to love, or did what I was compelled to do. It’s been that long-long enough to see my children have grandchildren. Long enough to have many of my friends and loved ones die in the course of a normal life, while I was here unable to know them in their final days.

So often in my daily life, the thought creeps in – “I don’t deserve this.” It lingers like acid in my mouth. But I have to push those types of thoughts away. I made a commitment long ago, many of us did. Some didn’t live up to their commitments, and some of us didn’t have a choice. Joe Stuntz didn’t have a choice. Neither did Buddy Lamont. I never thought my commitment would mean sacrificing like this, but I was willing to do so nonetheless. And really, if necessary, I’d do it all over again, because it was the right thing to do. We didn’t go to ceremony and say “I’ll fight for the people as long as it doesn’t cost too much.” We prayed, and we gave. Like I say, some of us didn’t have a choice. Our only other option was to run away, and we couldn’t even do that. Back then, we had no where left to run to.

I have cried so many tears over these three plus decades. Like the many families directly affected by this whole series of events, my family’s tears have not been in short supply. Our tears have joined all the tears from over 500 years of oppression. Together our tears come together and form a giant river of suffering and I hope, cleansing. Injustice is never final, I keep telling myself. I pray this is true for all of us.

To those who know I am innocent, thank you for your faith. And I hope you continue working for my release. That is, to work towards truth and justice. To those who think me guilty, I ask you to believe in and work for the rule of law. Even the law says I should be free by now, regardless of guilt. What has happened to me isn’t justice, it isn’t the law, it isn’t fair, it isn’t right. This has been a long battle in an even longer war. But we have to remain vigilant, as we have a righteous cause. After all this time, I can only ask this: Don’t give up. Not ever. Stay in this fight with me. Suffer with me. Grieve with me. Endure with me. Believe with me. Outlast with me. And one day, celebrate freedom with me. Hoka hey!

INCENDIARY ATTACK ON MEAT MARKET

December 26, 2009 – Chile

reported on Liberación Total:

English:

“On the night of December 25 an incendiary device was placed in a meat market belonging to the murderous Friosa company in Santiago.

The device consisted of a can with gasoline, attached to sponges, activated by a simple chemical timer, and which was hidden in the roof of the extermination camp, because this way the fire would spread better.

The fire was lit and it destroyed part of the roof of that filthy cemetery, where beings are sold as mere objects of consumption.

We set fire to this place because in it we recognize a clear symptom of the power relations that exist in society and to put an end to the support of a system based on annihilation and exploitation, as are the prisons, the schools, the companies, the barracks, etc …

This attack is in support of our comrades in the midst of a hunger strike, not as sacrifice but as a gesture of love and agitation, showing that prison has not annihilated them and that the war is fought both inside and out.

To the memory of all our comrades who have fallen in this war, as is the case of our beloved comrade Soledad Rosas, who made the decision to end her life while under arrest. As our beloved comrade Mauricio Morales, who died when the bomb he carried with him accidentally detonated.
In this war, declared centuries ago, no comrade is alone or forgotten!

To Diego Rios, your escape, which we have made ours, is a continuous action for the destruction of all prisons and cages. Your words are strength and energy for all who attack power and that is why with these flames we accompany you in flight.”

FIVE HENS LIBERATED

December 29, 2009 – Mexico

received anonymously:

ALF-suroeste
Abraham y Fermin.”

English:

“On December 27 the frente de liberación animal liberated five hens in a small village southeast of Mexico City. This time in the darkness we entered the property of a person who maintains a small poultry farm; the chickens were taken from anthropocentric hands and given freedom where they can now run and flit around in the earth. The frente de liberación animal has shown that direct action is a tool when there is no value given to the fact that an animal wants and longs for freedom as much as we do, to be somewhere away from civilization, away from domination, away from all anthropocentric practices.

We will not remain, with arms folded, watching as time consumes our yearning for freedom. Civilization is about to collapse, life and freedom no longer belong to the industrial system.

Total abolition of the prisons, and the cages!
For a free and wild life! ALF-southwest
Action dedicated to the earth liberation prisoners in Mexico

ATTACK ON MEAT TRUCK AND PSYCHIATRIC CLINIC IN SANTIAGO

January 4, 2010 – Chile

anonymous communique:

English:

“On the night of Tuesday the 29th, we had been planning to attack the evil tranquility of some exploiters. That’s why we left that night with what was needed to do it, rather than just sitting still with only the intention to do something.

The first thing we did was to go to the house of a murdering butcher (forgive the redundancy) where in the yard he kept a truck for transporting corpses, and we directed our rage at it. The lights in the house were off when we decided to act, spraying a very corrosive acid (which corrodes metal and plastic, among other things) on the windshield, part of the engine and two wheels; at the same time red paint was thrown on the large advertisement on the side, which advocated consumption of animals, leaving the truck completely ruined. The entry of the house was also stained with paint.

With the same anger we moved to a psychiatric clinic, which stood out because of some large windows which despite being reinforced, were smashed with stones, where it would remain until discovered by the executioners in white suits a few hours later.

Both attacks were aimed at the property of exploiters, agents/defenders of the domination and alienation, of some beings by/over others.

Authoritarian practices are found everywhere; you decide to be complacent or to attack them, making life an example through action.

These actions are a fraternal gesture for all our comrades in prison who are on hunger strike from December 20 to January 1, because the unwavering attitude of each of you fills us with pride and encourages us to undertake the offensive.

A greeting full of strength for all the wild and insurgent ones who have been (and will continue) acting in the territory named Mexico. Comrades continue attacking because in the war against domination we encourage and motivate one another with each action.

As we have already mentioned, each attack is in fighting memory of Mauricio Morales, comrade we continue to strike blows against the enemy.

Dear Diego, your absence from the cages fills us with happiness. Your fierceness and conviction give us the strength in this battle to the death. Continue forward comrade, each day that passes is a strike against power.

EXPLOSIVE ATTACKS AGAINST BANK AND CONSTRUCTION COMPANY

January 14, 2010 – Mexico

anonymous communique:

English:

“Around 3 in the morning on December 24 we left an explosive device stuffed with dynamite at the BBVA bank branch in Ecatepec, Mexico City. We simultaneously left another one of our gifts in front of the facade of the Kenworth company which was being guarded by two state police patrols. The two targets sustained damages to their windows.

We’ve carried out this action on the same street (José López Portillo) where a few weeks before the ‘Brigadas de Eco saboteadores por la Venganza Nunca Olvidada’ [Unforgettable Vengeance Eco-Sabotage Brigade] detonated a bomb made with cans of butane gas at a Banamex in Coacalco. The authorities did not imagine that other groups would again attack in the same ‘controlled perimeter,’ and they left such targets vulnerable and ready for our dynamite.

The destruction of their social peace was inevitable when the fuse was lit and the device activated. These explosions echoed with a sound loud in the ears of those who support power and authoritarianism won at the cost of the destruction of the planet on which we survive, caused by the catastrophic encroachment of climate change, which in turn is caused in large part by such companies as we attacked this morning.

BBVA is a deceitful company that manages money earned from the exploitation of animals, humans and the earth. Kenworth is a company bound to the construction industry and which has contacts with companies like CAT or Carso, which are directly responsible for environmental devastation. They received our message not with words but with actions, because we are facing in a radical way issues such as those noted in this communique; we have decided not to talk and to start to take action.

The day after our action the sell-out press mentioned nothing of what happened; instead it was full of hypocritical messages about ‘Merry Christmas’ festivities, the appalling day admired by insatiable capitalism as the socio-economic reclamation of its rule over the world. The conspiracy between the media and the authorities who have hidden our action was obvious; its purpose is to maintain calm in society during the holidays, and what person calmly watches the news seeing that during such important days of ‘family life,’ bombs are exploding in the country? We have defied their expectations, they now know that this discontent is not only in our heads but also in our acts of sabotage, although they hide or distort it.

With these explosions we want to express our solidarity with the detainees of December 15th in Tlalpan, Mexico City, especially with Abraham and Fermin, although you are still young, your great commitment to the liberation of the earth is more than obvious, and one of the ways to undertake the offensive for direct solidarity. Hold on comrades, the fire burns and the bombs explode in your names!

Direct solidarity with Víctor Herrera, Emmanuel Hernández, Abraham López y Fermín Gómez!

SABOTAGE AT MEAT RESTAURANT

January 17, 2010 – Chile

reported on Liberación Total:

Parrilladas Argentina

Parrilladas Argentina

English:

“Sabotage against a meat restaurant and real estate office in Santiago, $hile

At dawn on Thursday, January 14, protected by the silence we went to a very popular place where meat is sold in Santiago called Parrilladas Argentina[Argentina Grill]. There they profit from the death of animals and also re-create with splendor the speciesist practice of eating corpses.
At this place, located on the main street of the capital, their windows were broken, red paint bombs were thrown and ‘FLA’ was graffitied on the facade.

A new construction real estate office also received a gift from us and was left with several of its windows shattered.
Our environment is increasingly infected by the expansion of civilization with buildings and asphalt that kill the earth. The way these companies are lining their pockets is through the destruction of ecosystems; because of this we desire only their destruction.

Sabotage against promoters of exploitation is an effective tool to confront the collapse of the environment and of those who inhabit it.
The constant threat unleashes chaos with the capacity to put an end to what oppresses us.

With these acts we salute our comrades Abraham López and Fermin Gómez, caged by the Mexican State and Matías Castro, caged by the Chilean State. Strength comrades, we are brothers in ideas and practice, multiplying the actions.

COCA-COLA TARGETED BY ALF/ELF

January 22, 2010 – Mexico

Coca-Cola

anonymous communique:

“On the night of January 17 we decided to go out to once again prove that this war has not ended, that our actions have not stopped and that we continue to feel the rage that we have put into every action.
This time we put two packages of explosives in the front windows of the offices of the bottler FEMSA, owned by the filthy multinational Coca-Cola. The windows were completely destroyed in the explosion. The attack was carried out in Ecatepec, Mexico City.
Coca-Cola is an earth-destroying company that causeS the extinction of animal species, that uses extreme human exploitation to produce goods like soft drinks, and that claims and privatizes natural resources. Coca-Cola, one of the companies directly responsible for environmental deterioration, has been visited by us, anarchists and liberationists; we have decided in these cells to focus on quality actions, strengthening ourselves to expand our acts of sabotage.
While it is true that 2008 and 2009 were years of quantitative expansion, now it is 2010, a new year, with new strategies and new tactics, but with the same courage to act.
This action is dedicated with all our desire for freedom to the prisoners Víctor, Emmanuel, Abraham, Fermín, and Socorro of Tijuana. We hope that direct solidarity multiplies in clandestine actions, for their unconditional liberation.
We prepare our weapons for the climate change summit!

FREEDOM FOR 8 DOVES

January 24, 2010 – Uruguay

“During the early morning of Monday the 18th, we entered a ‘mini zoo’ located in a tourist resort area in Uruguay, and with the rain and the cold on our side, we intervened in the matter.

Inside this prison shouts of freedom were heard, nature oppressed by the speciesism established by the state which imprisons, tortures and murders millions of nonhuman animals. We can not allow it; that’s why we came to this ‘mini-prison’, hoping that security would be distracted by the calm and serene night, and we took action, opening a cage of white doves (around 25), cutting open the wire cage and freeing 8 doves.

In this prison, monkeys, rabbits and a large variety of birds were found (including a toucan who is the principal ‘attraction’).

Today we only released the doves, another day it will be all of them!

Frente de Liberacion Animal, Uruguay

We want to send greetings with a warm cry of struggle and resistance, all of our comrades in this struggle around the world, to all those who were kidnapped by the damned system and who this very day are being persecuted, interrogated and beaten by the forces of the established order, like comrades Abraham López Martínez and Fermín Gómez Trejo (from Mexico) to all who struggle day by day fighting for animal liberation.

And to all those Uruguayan comrades who have risen from their chairs and have began to fight!”

22 BIRDS FREED

January 25, 2010 – Uruguay

received anonymously:

“Montevideo, Uruguay.

In the early morning hours of Friday the 22nd we entered a large bird breeding farm, more specifically of common parrots, and with nothing more than pliers (yes, that simple) we began to open the cages. There were 22 birds locked up and all of them were released. We would have loved to destroy each of the cages before we left, but it was impossible.

We left the place quickly at the same time as the birds did, flying….

We want to send a greeting to all our comrades around here who have recently dared to gather up the courage and in the middle of the night have gone out to make animal liberation a reality.

Fire against everything that makes us slaves!

Police brutality breeds public outrage in wake of Jordan Miles beating

Take a look at the photos of Jordan Miles, the 18-year-old CAPA (Creative and Performing Arts) high school student allegedly beaten by Pittsburgh Police on January 11, and it’s impossible to ignore the signs of force used in his arrest. And while it is questionable whether this level of force was required to subdue a man of Miles’ size, the incident is now center stage, with community groups calling for action and formal investigations set to begin.

On Tuesday, the FBI announced it will investigate allegations that Miles’ arresting officers — Richard Ewing, Michael Saldutte, and David Sisak — brutally beat the teenager:

FBI spokesman Jeff Killeen says the probe is in an early stage that will determine whether there’s “a potential violation of federal civil rights criminal laws” and the need for a more thorough investigation.

Killeen says the assessment has begun even though the bureau has not yet received a letter from Jordan Miles’ attorney formally requesting a criminal investigation. (via Associated Press)

And on the heels of the FBI announcement, public outrage played out on the streets of downtown Pittsburgh. Miles’ CAPA classmates, along with local activists and community leaders from groups such as The Black Political Empowerment Planning Council (B-PEP), marched from outside CAPA to the office of Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, where a public rally was held. More than 50 classmates from Miles’ school took turns publicly expressing their grief, frustration, and anger over the police beating of their friend and classmate:

“Jordan will never forget what has been done to him, and he will have to live with this for the rest of his life,” said Damarra Underwood, Miles’ classmate at CAPA. “On behalf of his suffering, I believe the police who are involved in this case should be suspended without pay until this case is further investigated.” (via Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)

And longtime local activist, and former head of Pittsburgh’s NAACP chapter, Tim Stevens had this to say:

“I cannot remember in my more than 40 years of community activism seeing a picture much worse than that of the severely beaten face of Jordan Miles. I cannot fathom how the Pittsburgh police could in any reasonable way defend the beating, stomping, choking and kicking and hair-pulling of an unarmed, 5-7, 150-pound teenager by three armed police officers.” (via WTAE)

Following comments from activists and Miles’ classmates, Police Citizen Review Board chairwoman Marsha Hinton addressed the crowd and pledged a full investigation, saying: “Most of the members sitting here feel just as much outrage at what has happened to this child.”

Earlier in the week, as words of Miles’ beating spread, police chief Nate Harper asked the citizens of Pittsburgh to be patient as the Office of Municipal Investigations looks into the incident. At the same time, members of the Fraternal Order of Police pointed out the accomplishments of Ewing, Saldutte, and Sisak as the city’s best at getting guns off the streets.

“Their actions were correct and law-abiding by everything they received in their training,” FOP Vice President Charles Hanlon said. “The demand by special interest groups that they be removed from the streets is an insult to their hard work.” (via Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)

On Wednesday, after what some had viewed as an initial lack of support, the Pittsburgh chapter of the NAACP called for the firing of the officers involved in Miles’ beating and suggested criminal charges be filed. “When a young man is simply walking down a street to get to his grandmother’s house and is savagely beaten almost beyond recognition, we must speak out,” said M. Gayle Moss, president of the Pittsburgh NAACP. Moss also urged police to drop the loitering and aggravated assault charges against Miles.

But what happens next? For Miles, physical recovery is the first step. Last week, the young violinist and honor roll student told NPR that he was still awaiting physician approval to return to school, and suffering from nightmares and flashbacks.

At the same time, however, the fate of officers Ewing, Saldutte, and Sisak, the undercover officers who arrested Miles on suspicion of gun possession, remains unclear. At last word, the men had been ordered to uniformed office duty with no disciplinary action taken. And the charges against Miles still stand.

“I feel that my son was racially profiled,” Terez Miles told NPR earlier this week. “[Homewood is] a rough neighborhood; it was after dark. … They assumed he was up to no good because he’s black. My son, he knows nothing about the streets at all. He’s had a very sheltered life, he’s very quiet, he doesn’t know police officers sit in cars and stalk people like that.”

Claims of police brutality and racial profiling are sensitive subjects in Pittsburgh, especially given the city’s history of police violence against black citizens. In the wake of this recent incident, the names of past victims have been appearing with increasing frequency: Johnny Gammage, Maneia “Little Stoney” Bey, Deron S. Grimmitt, Jerry Jackson, and Micheal Ellerbe. Each name represents an incident that ended in the death of a black citizen. And in each case, officers were acquitted of any wrongdoing.

Nidal Malik Hasan, Suspected Fort Hood Shooter, Was Called “Camel Jockey”

Fort Hood Shooting Suspect Harassed By Others In Military and Wanted Out, Family Said

By BRIAN ROSS, JOSEPH RHEE, ANNA SCHECTER, AVNI PATEL, ETHAN NELSON, and DESIREE ADIB
Nov. 6, 2009

Fort Hood shooting suspect, Major Nidal Malik Hasan, wanted out of the Army after being constantly harassed by others in the military and was called a “camel jockey,” his family said.

As Hasan was about to be deployed to Iraq, he was suffering from some of the same stresses that he was trained as an Army psychiatrist to treat.

Although the 39-year-old had just been promoted to major in May, his family says he had hired a lawyer to help him get out of the Armed Forces.

“Apparently became very disgruntled in the mission in Iraq and Afghanistan and voiced that to a lot of his colleagues,” said Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX).

He also voiced it to the world in an Internet posting, where he compared suicide bombers to GI’s who save their colleagues by throwing themselves on a grenade.

“Just keep in mind mass killers pretty much know they want to die and they tend to take as many people with them as they can in a shooting,” said former FBI agent and ABC News consultant Brad Garrett, who also believes Hasan didn’t want to survive the Ft. Hood shooting.

“It is one of those things where he went and wanted to kill a lot of people and commit suicide maybe in his own mind that he’s saving peoples’ lives,” said Garrett. “As illogical as that sounds, in his mind, that would be quite logical.”

Hasan is an American citizen of Palestinian descent and after the 9/11 attacks, his cousin says he was the target of constant harassment from others in the military. His tormentors called him a “camel jockey,” said his cousin, Nader Hasan. He wanted out of the Army, so he paid back his military student loans and hired an attorney.

While the bullying irritated Hasan, Nader Hasan believes his upcoming deployment is what set him off. The cousin said, “My mom is his mom… and we didn’t know he was being deployed until we heard it on the news today.”

Hasan went to college at Virginia Tech and studied medicine at the military’s medical school.

A Silver Spring, MD neighbor told ABC News she was interviewed Thursday by the FBI about Hasan.

“He’s a quiet man, he looked like a nice person to me, so since I have been living here I never heard a noise in that house,” said Vivian Tchangan, who added that Hasan wrote “Allah” on his door.

A devout Muslim, Hasan described himself as reserved and funny in an application for a Muslim marriage matchmaking program run by Imam Faizul Khan or the Islamic Society of Washington Area.

Khan told ABC News Hasan was looking for an equally devout wife. He said, “He wants someone who prays everyday, who adheres to the Quran, who is a good muslim woman.”

According to military records, Hasan worked as a psychiatrist at the Walter Reed military hospital for six years until this July. Congressman McCaul says Hasan had a poor performance evaluation at Walter Reed, which resulted in his transfer to Ft. Hood and “while there received a lot of advanced training in weapons, shooting classes.”

Seattle police officer killed; search on for shooter

Seattle police officer killed; search on for shooter

A procession of patrol cars accompanies the fallen officer’s body down Yesler Way at 3 a.m. Sunday.

By KOMO Staff

SEATTLE – A Seattle police officer was shot to death and another officer was wounded late Saturday night as they were sitting inside their patrol car in the city’s Central District neighborhood.

The officer who died was a veteran of the department, and the woman who was wounded is a student officer in training, Assistant Police Chief Jim Pugel said.

The two were parked in their patrol car near the intersection of 29th Avenue and East Yesler Way just after 10 p.m. when another vehicle pulled up alongside and someone opened fire on the officers.

An impromptu memorial for the fallen officer has appeared on the sidewalk near the shooting.

The training officer, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, was hit several times and died at the scene. His name has not been released.

The student officer, who was in the driver’s seat, received minor injuries. She was able to get out of the patrol car, return fire several times at the shooter’s fleeing vehicle, and call for additional units.

Officers from all precincts responded, as well as homicide detectives and the crime scene investigations unit. Officers scoured the neighborhood for the gunman, but no arrests have been made.

The student officer was rushed to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where she is expected to recover.

A man who lived nearby said he heard eight to ten shots fired, then another volley of about six shots.

The witness said the shots came in rapid-fire succession, like an automatic or semi-automatic weapon. But investigators said they haven’t yet determined what type of firearm was used.

Pugel called the act a “deliberate homicide” and vowed to hunt down whoever is responsible.

“The officers are very upset. This is highly unusual. This is an attack, not only on police officers, but on society as a whole,” he said.

Investigators have been at the scene all night collecting evidence, and fellow officers lined Yesler Way as the fallen officer’s body was driven to the King County Medical Examiner’s office just before 3 a.m.

Police are looking for a car described as a light-colored sedan that drove away from the shooting scene, but no detailed description of the vehicle or suspected shooter was available.

Police aren’t sure if the shooter’s car was hit by the student officer as she returned fire.

This investigation is very much active and ongoing, and is a priority for the Seattle Police Department, officials said.

Information is limited at this time, as it is still early in the investigation. More information is expected to be released Sunday afternoon, said a police spokesman.

The killing is the first line-of-duty death for the department since Officer Joselito Barber was fatally injured in a 2006 crash by a woman who was high on cocaine.

Woman Faces 15 Years for Cutting Line at Walmart, KKK Involved

by Boyce Watkins, PhD

Heatherellis-KKK

Heather Ellis of Kennett, Mo., has quite a story to tell. It all started nearly three years ago in a local Wal-Mart.

Ellis was shopping in the store with a cousin, and the two temporarily parted ways to find the shortest line. Seeing that the other line was moving faster, Ellis went to get in line with her cousin.

She was accused of cutting the line by a store employee, who then notified the security guard. According to Ellis, she was shoved by another customer, had her items pushed to the side and was shortchanged when she finally checked out. The police affidavit states that Ellis was belligerent, loud, abusive and cursing when she was told to leave the store by the assistant manager.

Ellis’ aunt, Lily Blackmon, received a frantic call from her son and claims that when she arrived, her daughter’s head was being repeatedly banged against the police car as she told officers that she wasn’t resisting arrest. Blackmon, who was a probation officer in the town for 11 years, asked the officers why her niece was getting such rough treatment.

“I said, ‘What is going on?’ And all [the officer] could say was, ‘She cursed,’” said Blackmon.

Ellis was charged with disturbing the peace, trespassing, resisting arrest and two counts of assaulting a police officer. She was then offered a plea deal by Dunklin County Prosecutor Stephen Sokoloff. The prosecutor offered to drop the felony counts to one misdemeanor of disturbing the peace, as long as Ellis signed the plea deal. Her aunt claims that the deal was offered so their family wouldn’t file a lawsuit.

Ellis refused to take the plea deal, claiming that she wasn’t willing to admit to something she didn’t do; however, 11 months later, the misdemeanor counts were dropped, which seemed to be good news. The good news, though, was replaced with something even more disturbing.

It turned out that the misdemeanor counts had been replaced by felonies. Ellis now faces 15 years in prison if convicted. When her aunt went to prosecutor Sokoloff to find out what happened, Sokoloff allegedly told her, “Mrs. Ellis, when you get through, I don’t care what you say. You may as well take my way out. My way was the plea bargain. If you don’t take that way, I can assure you, you’ll never win in here.”

Ellis claims that her pending convictions have cost her two jobs and the chance to enter medical school, but she still refuses to sign the plea deal. Racism recently entered in to the story when Ellis was handed KKK cards from a Kennett police officer warning her about her actions. The cards stated, “You’ve just been paid a social visit by the Ku Klux Klan; the next visit will not be social.” The officer claims that he only showed the family the cards to make them aware of the situation. Since that time, and after a dramatic plea for support, people have come to help Heather. The site www.SaveHeatherEllis.com has emerged, and her father appeared on CNN on the 15th of October to tell her story.

Dr. Towanna Freeman, a management consultant, argues that Walmart was to blame for the unfortunate sequence of events: “No matter what angle you take on this case, it all started when Walmart failed a valued customer and it’s Wal-Mart that owes Ms. Heather Ellis a written apology.”

Dr. Freeman goes on to argue that Walmart should have cleared up the disturbance as soon as it occurred, rather than allowing it to get out of hand.

When it comes to the trial of Heather Ellis, the bottom line is this: This young woman’s future should not be in jeopardy over this incident. If the prosecutor’s office could drop significant felony counts down to one misdemeanor, then they can drop the charges altogether. This may also be a case of what I call, “You got the wrong black person syndrome,” in which police treat a black suspect a certain way because they believe the person is either uneducated or without influence. Most cases of police abuse go unreported or without accountability by the police department. Once they found out that Ellis was a college student, this may have led to the surprisingly generous concessions made in the original plea deal. There appears to be a power trip in this case, in which the prosecutor (like the one in the Jena 6 case) seems to feel that he has the right to destroy this young woman’s life over an argument at Wal-Mart. I don’t think we should let that happen. Rev. Sharpton and I will have something interesting to talk about this week.

Jack Poole, VANOC Chairman, Dies as Olympic Torch Lit in Greece

Vancouver Olympic chairman Poole dies

Jack Poole, head of Vanoc

CBC News, Friday, October 23, 2009
http://www.cbc.ca/sports/story/2009/10/23/jack-poole-obit.html?ref=rss

Jack Poole, the man who brought the 2010 Winter Olympic Games to Vancouver, has died.

Olympic officials confirmed early Friday that Poole, the chairman of the Vancouver Olympic organizing committee’s board of directors, died after a lengthy battle with pancreatic cancer.

The death of Poole, 76, comes a day after the flame for the Vancouver Games was lit in Olympia, Greece.

During the ceremony, International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge gave special thanks to Poole, to whom, he said, “I bring a very warm and special salute.”

British Columbia Premier Gordon Campbell, who attended the torch-lighting ceremony, also praised Poole’s work in bringing the games to Vancouver.

“British Columbia and Canada have lost a great friend,” Campbell said in a statement Friday.

“Few citizens reflect the generosity of spirit, the commitment to the public good and the undying dedication to public well-being that was exemplified by Jack Poole. His was an example of leadership, strength and integrity that is unmatched in my recollection”.

Poole, born on April 14, 1933, in the small town of Mortlach, Sask., started out in residential construction and went on to become one of B.C.’s top real estate developers.

He was also known for his philanthropic work and was awarded the Order of Canada in 2006.

Nahr al-Bared reconstruction delays protested

Ray Smith, Electronic Lebanon, 1 October 2009

Palestinians from Nahr al-Bared and their Lebanese supporters protest the halt to reconstruction, Tripoli, north Lebanon (August 2009). (Matthew Cassel)

Since the end of August, construction equipment in the Palestinian refugee camp of Nahr al-Bared, near the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli, has stood unused after the Lebanese State Council granted a two month moratorium for the reconstruction of the camp. Nahr al-Bared, home to approximately 30,000 refugees, was destroyed during a three-month-long battle between the Lebanese army and the militant group Fatah al-Islam in the summer of 2007.

Although a master plan for the reconstruction was already compiled by early 2008 and approved by the Lebanese government, the beginning of the construction works was delayed again and again. Ancient ruins were discovered beneath the rubble of the camp this spring, but few among the refugees believed the reports. For the last two years they heard too many — often flimsy — reasons for repeated delays in the reconstruction of the camp.

However, the archaeological findings were legitimate and the Lebanese Directorate General for Antiquities (DGA) became involved. Along with the UN agency for Palestine refugees (UNRWA) and the office of the Lebanese prime minister, a solution was found: before the different sectors of the old camp would be backfilled and the concrete foundations laid, the DGA would excavate and document the archaeological findings.

The delay is understandably frustrating for refugees who could hardly believe their eyes when, after almost two years, reconstruction finally began in Nahr al-Bared late last June. According to UNRWA, the backfilling first stage of the eight-stage plan was almost complete by the end of August and the laying of the concrete foundation was about to start when the agency was ordered by the Lebanese government to halt construction.

Amr Saededine, an organizer with the Nahr al-Bared Reconstruction Commission, told The Electronic Intifada, “There is a real fear in the camp based on previous experiences that the displacement will continue and they will not be allowed to return to Nahr al-Bared,” referring to camps like Nabatiyeh, Tel al-Zatar and even areas of Shatila that were destroyed in the past and never rebuilt.

The leader of the opposition-aligned Free Patriotic Movement, former Lebanese General Michel Aoun, filed a plea this summer against the government’s decision regarding the backfilling of the camp. On 18 August, the English-language Lebanese newspaper The Daily Star reported that the State Council, in light of Aoun’s request, granted a moratorium for the time being. A definitive decision is expected in October.

Representatives of the Nahr al-Bared Reconstruction Commission accuse Lebanese politicians of using the archaeological findings for scoring political gains. The commission points to a discourse demanding the transformation of the ancient ruins into a tourist site. In a recent speech, Michel Aoun denied delaying the reconstruction of Nahr al-Bared but said: “It is the government’s responsibility to purchase substitute lands to build the camp on, instead of rebuilding on the site where an archeological discovery was recently made.” The commission meanwhile rejects resettling the refugees on lots surrounding Nahr al-Bared, calling Aoun’s intentions “theoretical and unworkable.”

Thousands of Nahr al-Bared residents organized a massive protest at the end of August at the entrance to the construction site, which was complemented by protests in other Palestinian refugee camps throughout Lebanon. Criticism not only targeted the halting of reconstruction, but also the Lebanese army’s continued siege of the camp. The Lebanese army controls movement inside and at the perimeters of Nahr al-Bared, isolating the camp’s residents and crippling its economy. On 16 September, the refugees took their protest to the streets of Tripoli where they were joined by Lebanese supporters.

Three protesters were shot dead and many others wounded at a demonstration during the military operations in Nahr al-Bared at the end of June 2007. Since then, protests have been limited to non-confrontational gatherings, but at a press conference on 3 September, activists from Nahr al-Bared hinted at launching a series of nonviolent direct actions and more strategic campaigns.

Saededine of the reconstruction commission stated that these latest protests were just the beginning: “There is an escalation happening now in the organizing against the halt to reconstruction. [The protests] began in Nahr al-Bared, then [the nearby refugee camp of] Baddawi, then Tripoli and next Beirut.” He said that there would be a sit-in held on 12 October in downton Beirut “organized by all the camps in Lebanon, saying that we will not accept [a failure] to reconstruct Nahr al-Bared. This is also supported by forces in the Lebanese civil society [movement].”

Nahr al-Bared’s refugees meanwhile stick to a slogan they’ve been using since the first days of their displacement in 2007. At the nearby Baddawi refugee camp, displaced families had taken refuge in schools which they refused to leave for other temporary shelter, claiming that they would only be satisfied by a return to Nahr al-Bared camp — or to their property in Palestine.

Ray Smith is an activist with the anarchist media collective a-films. The collective has been working in Nahr al-Bared for the past two years and has published about a dozen short films from the camp at a-films.blogspot.com.
