More Armed Attacks On Zapatistas
Posted by APOC-Philly in General, Mexico, News on September 23, 2009
September 19, 2009 by glasgowchiapassolidaritygroup
On the morning of Tuesday 1st September about 150 members of the paramilitary groups Aric Official, Aric Historical and OPDDIC from Santo Tomas attacked a group of Zapatista support bases who were working in White House predio, in a community recently established on lands they have been working for the last 12 years, within the autonomous municipality of San Manuel, caracol La Garrucha. In the clash a member of Aric-Union of Unions was killed, and more than 20 people were wounded, most Zapatistas. Seven Zapatistas were captured, imprisoned and tortured in Santo Tomas. During their detention they were forced to sign documents of indictment, and were savagely tortured. One man was suspended from a tree with the aim of hanging him, and another had his testicles cut off.
The lands were reclaimed by the Zapatistas in 1994. The support bases who live there have been harassed by members of these organisations since July. They have established a civil peace camp there to monitor and prevent these attacks. This is the first time that they have been attacked by such a large number of people, bearing machetes, sticks and firearms. Evicting people from their land, injuring, stealing, or killing livestock, and kidnapping, beating and torturing Zapatista support bases are practices whose sole intention is to provoke and create sources of conflict and remove them from their lands.
A statement by the Council of Good Governement of La Garrucha, Carocole III about this incident can be found at http://chiapas.indymedia.org/
SAN MANUEL ZAPATISTAS ATTACKED by ARMED PRI MEMBERS
An attack by Aric-Official and Aric-UU left 1 member of Aric-UU dead, 8 Zapatistas injured, 8 Aric members injured and 7 Zapatistas taken prisoner. Those Zapatistas prisoners were taken to Santo Tomás ejido and tortured for 36 hours until government officials and human rights defenders arrived. One man is in such serious condition that the Good Government Junta in La Garrucha told La Jornada’s reporter they don’t know whether he will live. The prisoners were placed in deep mud holes during pouring rain, stuck with machetes, tied to orange bushes, had tubes placed in their throats, doused with cold water, made to sign declarations while blindfolded, forced to run without shoes and psychologically tortured by threats to cut off their testicles. One man had rope burns around his neck where they placed a noose and said they were going to hang him.
This incident occurred in the valley of the Jataté River, in what is known as the Las Tazas Canyon, in the Lacandón Jungle of Chiapas, Mexico. The Zapatista name for the region is the Municipio Autónomo Rebelde Zapatista de San Manuel (San Manuel County). It is also known in some books written in Spanish as Avellanal, the name of a nearby ejido.
On September 1, approximately 60 Zapatistas were working a plot of land called Casa Blanca, next to the Santo Tomás Ejido. They were attacked by a group of 150 PRI members, which included the two Aric factions and members of the Organization for the Defense of Indigenous and Campesino Rights (Opddic, its initials in Spanish), also affiliated with the PRI. Zapatistas in the La Tazas Canyon, and elsewhere in Chiapas, refer to the Opddic as a paramilitary group. The gang of PRI groups had machetes, clubs and guns for weapons, the guns allegedly supplied by the Opddic members. The Zapatistas were unarmed. The group of attackers closed off the way out of Casa Blanca so that the outnumbered Zapatistas had to pass through them to get away.
Casa Blanca is land recuperated by the Zapatistas as a result of the 1994 Uprising. Consistent with the EZLN’s directive to occupy recuperated land, the Zapatistas of the Las Tazas Canyon have worked the Casa Blanca land since September 1997. Aric members from Santo Tomás now say that the owner sold this piece of land to the government in 1993 and, therefore, it was not land recuperated by the Zapatistas. Consequently, members of Aric from Santo Tomás claim the land as theirs. The Zapatistas say that such a sale never took place and have worked the land for 12 years. Reading between the lines of newspaper reports on this situation, one gets the impression that although civilian Zapatista bases worked the land, they did not construct houses and live on it. The provocations occurred after the Zapatistas completed land measurements and began to construct their houses on the land.
The Rural Association of Collective Interest (Aric, its initials in Spanish) is a campesino (peasant) organization in the Jungle region. Many of those who organized the Zapatista National Liberation Army (EZLN) in its growth period were Aric members. The organization was weakened when its members who also belonged to the EZLN left the organization to prepare for war (around 1992). Since the 1994 Zapatista Uprising, Aric has split into various factions: Aric-Official, Aric-UU (or historic), Aric-PAN and ARIC-Democratic and Independent (Aric-ID), among others. Aric-Official and Aric-UU are affiliated with the PRI political party and are not sympathetic to the EZLN, although they may occasionally share a common interest. They are pro-government, but not paramilitary. Aric-ID is a mix of folks; many sympathetic to the EZLN’s goals and some belonging to the EZLN’s Other Campaign.
There are several aspects to this attack worth pointing out. First, there had been unarmed provocations by the Aric-Official and the Aric-UU members from Santo Tomás prior to September 1 without serious injury. The two PRI groups had warned the government that they were going to evict the Zapatistas. The San Manuel Zapatistas sent their unarmed civilian guards to provide some security for those in Casa Blanca. The use of these guards had proven effective in 3 communities under siege: 24 de Diciembre, Bolón Ajaw and Agua Clara. The addition of Opddic members who were not from Santo Tomás and the Opddic’s provision of guns to Aric members was the first time the civilian guards have faced an armed attack and a serious escalation of hostilities. Secondly, the government knows whether or not it bought the land in 1993 and could have resolved the dispute as soon as the differences arose. However, it chose to let the communities confront one another until someone died. Finally, the role of the local Chiapas media emerged once again as a purveyor of propaganda.
San Manuel is the Chiapas Support Committee’s (CSC) partner Zapatista County. The CSC established the relationship with San Manuel in October 2002, just 2 months after a large paramilitary attack by the Opddic on another San Manuel community, Nuevo Guadalupe Quexil, in a different part of San Manuel. Some 200 armed Opddic members attacked the small village of Quexil, but were, rather amazingly, driven away by unarmed Zapatistas. Several Zapatistas were shot and severely injured and required hospitalization. At that time the International Committee of the Red Cross still had a clinic in the canyons region and its fully equipped ambulance came to the scene and gave emergency care to the severely injured.
That was our introduction to both San Manuel and the Opddic. Since then, the Opddic has continued its threats and aggressions, including death threats to some of the people with whom we work. Opddic members pal around with local government officials and police, as well as numerous federal army soldiers who are stationed throughout this region. According to La Jornada and local press, the Opddic is sometimes uncomfortable for the state government, but at other times useful, like in San Sebastián Bachajón. Its members form part of the base of the Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) that governed Mexico for more than 70 years.
The September 1 armed attack follows on the heels of the July 21 attack on Mitzitón campesinos belonging to the EZLN’s Other Campaign by members of the Army of God. One Other Campaign member died in that attack and 5 were injured.

Oaxaca Justice Condemns Innocent APPO Man for the Murder of Brad Will

No Evidence and No Witnesses to the Actual Crime: Juan Manuel Martinez Moreno Sentenced to Prison
By Nancy Davies
Commentary from Oaxaca
July 10, 2009
Read Amendment Below July 19, 2009
Juan Manuel Martinez Moreno has been sentenced to prison by the judge of the Fifth Federal Court, Rosa Iliana Noriega Perez, for the murder of US Indymedia videographer Brad Will on October 26, 2006. This in spite of:
- Brad Will video-graphed his murderers running toward him carrying pistols
- The two assailants shown in the video, Abel Zarate, registrar of Santa Lucia del Camino, and Oswaldo Manuel Aguilar Coello who was a municipal police officer, were arrested but subsequently released by government orders. Both are strongly tied to the PRI
- There was no evidence for accusing Juan Martinez Moreno, who was standing near, not facing, Brad Will when Will was shot
- The “witnesses” in fact saw nothing; Feria Perez, the chief witness, admitted he repeated hearsay

D.R. 2009 Noticias
One of Martinez Moreno’s lawyers noted that Judge Noriega Perez, accepted that Martinez Moreno should be sentenced because his legal stays had expired, although nothing has been proved against him. The judge ordered that the testimony of the two witnesses, Alfredo Feria Perez, the nephew of the former PRI municipal president of Santa Lucia del Camino, and PRIista Carol Ivan Ilescas Resendiz, be accepted as fact, although Feria Perez said, “he knew from comments made by others that Brad Will had been killed by an APPO activist.” And who made that comment? It was the Attorney General of Oaxaca at the time, Lizbeth Cana Cadeza.
The frame-up is clearly the work of the Oaxaca government, in cahoots with the federal government. Their reason: money from the USA for Plan Merida would not be forthcoming if Brad Will’s killer were not caught. This is the only one of the (at least) twenty-three homicides of APPO sympathizers in which someone has been indicted and judged guilty – the wrong guy. All the deaths of the 2006 uprising against the APPO were the work of government death squads.
The court order kills the suspense ― at least for now ― after four different judicial hearings and court stays preceding Martinez Moreno’s sentence to imprisonment at Santa Maria Ixcotel, near Oaxaca City. His sentence has raised the ire of not only the APPO, but also the family of Brad Will, who have known for some time that a cover-up is in process. Also outraged are clerical and civil groups. Mexican and USA clerics – eighty-four from the USA and eighty-one from Mexico – sent a letter to presidents Calderon and Obama stating that the guilty verdict could only be “a justification and condition to accelerate the funds to Mexico to carry out Plan Merida.”
In the letter, also sent to the US Department of State and to the Mexican Secretary of Government, the clerics urge a review of the case taking into account the recommendations of the National Commission for Human Rights (CNDH, in its Spanish initials) and international organizations which all discounted the idea that Martinez Moreno was involved in the killing. The bias was so evident that the CNDH recommended that the case against Martinez Moreno be thrown out.
Martinez Moreno, a baker by trade, was arrested two years after Will’s death, in October of 2008. The letter states, “Juan Manuel is not responsible for the crime he is accused of. And during the judicial process many grave irregularities are found which make the case unjust and illegal. And more than that, Juan Manuel’s family and lawyers have been the objects of various pressures and intimidations. The more than twenty-three homicides of 2006 remain in absolute impunity and obviously there is no one being detained. Only, surprisingly, Juan Manuel Martinez Moreno, accused of the death of the North American journalist. All the assassinated during the political conflict are Oaxaqueños, with the exception of Bradley Roland Will.”

Amendment July 19, 2009: As for Juan Manuel Martinez Moreno being sentenced—it turns out that was not so; he was sentenced to a judicial hearing (as opposed to being freed), which will also be in front of a judge, there being no jury trial system. He’s been held for nearly a 580 days in Ixcotel, and was never freed throughout the prior four court protection amparos. Now his lawyers will have to convince the judge who can actually declare him guilty and sentence him in the sense of the word as we use it in the USA, or free him.Facing this, his lawyers have called on anybody who has more evidence in the way of photos or videos or actually saw the shooters. Meanwhile, a committee arrived from Mexico City by a special airplane. They were from the federal body that investigates crimes against journalists. They came unannounced and never contacted anybody in state government, also bringing investigating officials from the United States. What all that means I don’t know—clearly the case is not closed.
My apologies to all readers for creating confusion.

Mexico: Arson Attack Against Police Vehicle in Solidarity with Indigenous Resistance in Peru

anonymous communique :

“On the night of June 8, we, the Frente de Liberación de la Tierra, along with some anarcho-Insurrectional individuals who are committed to constant conflict with the state and its institutions, decided to carry out an action together in the city of Ecatepec in Mexico State. This time our main objective was the machines that belong to authorities in that city that are used to rip up trees from their roots and to cover the earth with concrete; the machines were hidden under the bridge over Avenida Morelos and López Portillo.
When we arrived there we realized that the earth-destroying owners’ slaves were inside the machines, and that they surely wouldn’t be leaving until the following day, to work and to be exploited to earn a few coins for their subsistence. Why is it that people are watching the machines? Is it that the owners fear leaving them alone and the next morning finding them unusable, that their urbanist project be delayed and thousands of pesos lost in damages, like they have seen happen in other municipalities in Mexico State?
This objective was abandoned and we decided to carry out another; in front of the excavators, bulldozers and other machines was a large command headquarters of state police torturers, the ASE (Agency of State Security), violators of the prisoners in Atenco, accomplices in the killing of animals in Jaltenco, protectors of the interests of the multinationals, killers of the earth, living with the impunity that Mexican justice gives them, laughing with their machine guns on their backs and confidant that they can destroy any protest with their repression. They were there; maybe they didn’t know that all violence creates counter violence and for all who are struck down, sooner or later there will be a response.
Dedicated like wild wolves who have left their dens under the full moon, we placed an incendiary device in one of the trucks, a small flame ignited the engine and burnt the truck.
Our sabotage was fast and effective, the destruction of social peace was imminent. What police would be expecting an arson attack in front of their very noses? How do those commanders feel who boast of the fast effectiveness of their subordinates now that a group of eco-anarchists have attacked their facilities? Do they feel horrible because the raid they carried out after the fire was useless; they could not catch those responsible who now write these lines of revenge against the anthropocentric state and its institutions?
The war against this system is deadly serious, if they order their police to suppress, incendiary self-defense will rise up.
We dedicate this action to the fierce defense that is carried out in the Amazon in Peru; the peasants killed by the anthropocentrist state have been avenged by their natural instinct to defend the wilderness, killing, kidnapping and also injuring the police.
Let’s defend the planet where we live!
Show your teeth!
Now no more passivity!

Graffiti from Mexico City: 2010 Riot!!!
On October 2, 1968, just ten days before the opening of the Mexico City Olympic Games, over 300 protesters were shot & killed in a massacre initiated by police & military forces, including a special unit tasked with security: the ‘Olympia Brigade’.
The deadly repression was the government’s response to a growing mass movement that saw hundreds of thousands of protesters in the streets demanding democracy and an end to police violence.
Although the International Olympic Committee had nothing to say about this violence, which was carried out to ensure an ‘Olympic peace’, when two black US athletes got on the podium and raised their fists as a sign of protest against racist US policies, they were stripped of their medals and expelled from the Games.

Mexico: Police Post and Leather Expo Torched in Memory of Chilean Anarchist Mauricio Morales
Posted by APOC-Philly in General on June 3, 2009

reported anonymously to Bite Back:
In English:
“May 27th of this year:
Recently we received news which was painful for the entire insurrectional movement; our compañero Mauricio Morales had died from the explosion of a bomb he had been carrying in his backpack. With determination and conviction he had decided to use it in opposition to the social order of the powerful who govern Chile, he decided to take a step forward in order to shout one more time that social war is inevitable, he took in his own hands the vengeance that we in Mexico have not demanded from all those people who punish with their whip– no more, no less– those who have decided to fight a war to the death every day against the present state of things. Many have said compañero Mauricio died in combat, as an anarchist warrior loyal to the idea of the destruction of the established order. In his backpack he carried his heart, in his heart he carried rage and he had turned that rage into action that night which is what most frightens the ideological apparatus of the state, he turned it into insurrectional violence.
This incident is one of the things that went through our heads before carrying out our action. We have realized that it is time to begin spreading the offensive against the state, to begin to expropriate the weapons of our executioners to use against them, to agitate the masses in demonstrations controlled by riot police, to throw mototov cocktails at police stations, to secretly and daily conspire, to detonate bombs at the icons of the capitalist-speciesist-patriarchal system, to coordinate decentralized actions in an informal way and to focus ourselves on the quality and the quantity of our economic sabotage; it is time for everything to explode; we will happily dance on the dead body of this system which is becoming more and more agonizing and degrading; the streets will be illuminated by the abolitionist fire; the love we feel for the world is no longer just an incendiary dream.
In this spirit, we claim the arson attack inside a state police post in the town of Coacalco in Mexico State. Our courage brought us to climb the walls of the post, to enter through a window on the second floor, when realizing that there was no one inside and that the torturers were preparing to begin using the post, we decided to set fire to their chairs, couches, police uniforms, radios, work tools, and a cot among other things and to leave anarchist graffiti against these underhanded bastards, about the destruction of the planet and animals, both human and nonhuman; because while they protect the state and its putrid institutions this is happening on the planet that we inhabit, the expansion of civilization and the industrial technological system, leaving the forests, prairies, rivers and lakes desolate. They are slowly lost little by little due to human thoughtlessness and anthropocentric attitudes. And we will not let that happen any longer:
War against the capitalist system, destroyer of the planet!
Revolutionary solidarity with our comrades in Chile during this difficult time!
That Mauricio’s death will set up incendiary barricades!
Bullets, bombs, fire and stones to the state and its accomplices!
Sincerely: Commando of free, dangerous, wild and incendiary individuals for the Black Plague – - – (CILPSPN)”

“At 5:30 in the morning on May 26 the terrorist cell of the f.l.a./c.v.p. [conspiración por venganza / conspiracy for revenge] took to the streets of the Coyoacán borough of Mexico City. The place of our attack was an expo of animal skins called exibipiel. The place was studied so that nothing could go wrong before the moment arrived. We arrived with much courage and conviction and we placed the device inside the expo facilities. After leaving the device there it was not long before fire began to consume the exibipiel tent; for that reason we did not take our time leaving. We ran with great joy and satisfaction over this action and while we were outside the place we watched as the fire continued consuming the facility. Later we realized that a large part of the facility was undamaged by this c.p.v. terror attack. But we are not discouraged because we know that this attack was a warning to them. The damned speciesists have realized who started the fire that damaged their facility. So now they will feel the threat and the courage of a force that is just under the surface. At any moment we will return to action, as long as the speciesists continue exploiting animals we will continue to attack them, but this does not compare with the pain and suffering felt by the animals as they are skinned. For this was a bit of canvas and some posts but the next time will be the whole facility that enriches the speciesists at the expense of the pain of others
We will not stop the attacks

Mexico: Four Telmex Phones and Two Churches Set on Fire

We did this against institutions of lies and manipulation that hide themselves behind the name of their god to obscure their terrible sexual abuses and corrupt deals with any type or style of government.
