An Interview with Bryant Terry on Race, Class, Food, and Culture – Part 1
Posted by APOC-Philly in Interview on August 21, 2009
Interview by Latoya Peterson who is an editor of Racialicious

Bryant Terry is an eco chef, food justice activist, and author of Vegan Soul Kitchen (VSK): Fresh, Healthy, and Creative African-American Cuisine (Da Capo/Perseus March 2009). For the past nine years he has worked to build a more just and sustainable food system and has used cooking as a tool to illuminate the intersections among poverty, structural racism, and food insecurity. His interest in cooking, farming, and community health can be traced back to his childhood in Memphis, Tennessee, where his grandparents inspired him to grow, prepare, and appreciate good food.
Read more about Bryant here. I interviewed Bryant earlier this year for a project that never got off the ground. However, this interview was too good not to share.
—
So we are here with Bryant Terry who has a new book out called Vegan Soul Kitchen, which is a collection of recipes that look at food and veganism and culture. Can you explain a little about who you are and what you do?
Wow. I do a lot of things. These days, I’ve been saying I’m a creative person who does a number of things that help people be more aware of their environment, particularly their food. I call myself “the eco-chef” and a lot of people ask “well, what’s eco-chef? How did you come up with that term?” And for me, it’s about helping people become more aware of the interconnectedness of all living beings, and how we’re just part of this complex whole with the environment, the animal kingdom, the mineral kingdom, the plant kingdom. I just want to help people to see that, so we can be more compassionate and present, and see how every action we take affects the whole.
Let’s talk about your new book. When you started Vegan Soul Kitchen, what was your motive behind writing this book, and what were you trying to accomplish with it?
I’ll start by saying that I have some issues with both of those terms – both “vegan” and “soul,” meaning “soul food” because I think they can be loaded, and it brings up a lot when you use those terms. I always say “vegan” is a great way to encapsulate what I wanted to do with this book and I’m certainly aware of and very sympathetic to all of the issues that are important to people who understand themselves as vegans. While my diet is devoid of meat, I don’t call myself a vegan; I don’t call myself anything. I talk about the way I’m kind of on a continuum of consumption – I’ve been everything from an omnivore to a vegetarian to vegan to a fruitarian, I think I tried a breath-atarianism for a day. Given the fluidity of my journey, I’ve come to understand that a diet is such a personal journey. I don’t think it’s my place to say what anyone’s diet should be, and I don’t think it’s anyone’s place to say what one’s diet should be, it’s really about checking in and being on that journey with one’s self.
I don’t know if you needed to hear all that, but I wanted to share it. (Laughs)
No, that’s great to actually parse out. I know you did that a little [in your previous book] Grub, where you talked about how you didn’t want people to be sneaking around outside of their food boundaries. Can you explain that concept a bit more?
I came to that conclusion because of my own process, having been a vegetarian and then kind of moving into strict veganism and having a moment where I wanted to have some cheese and I wanted to have eggs, and I just felt like I might be hypocritical if I do that, or others might judge me, or the judgment coming from myself. And I felt a similar anxiety from other people who defined their diets in the same way, who felt that they needed to or wanted to shift their dietary pattens. I had a friend who was a strict vegan and she got pregnant, and for whatever reason, she decided that she wanted to start eating fish. And she was so anxiety-ridden about sharing that with friends, with family members, with colleagues, because she felt like it would somehow be such a departure from all the values she had been expressing about who she was. I really want people to feel free to just shift and change and not feel like they’re going to be damned to hell if they do that.
That’s fascinating, especially when you look at the conversations we’re having around food in the public sphere, especially as people are starting to realize that the issue we have around food and consumption and the issues we have concerning the environment are in some way linked. There is a lot of discussion of guilt around people’s food choices, or a lot of moralizing that it’s better to be vegetarian or it’s better to eat more vegetables. You got into that a bit in Grub – [the idea that] there are things that are better for your body, there are things that are worse for your body, but it’s more of a whole conscious eating.
Yeah, before I forget, I wanted to go back to your question about my new book and what motivated me to write it. The impetus to write this book came from me feeling so upset, almost livid, at the way in which African-American cuisine was being – and continues to be, in many ways – vilified, through the media, through public health officials, as kind of the bane of African American health. “African Americans are suffering from the highest rates of obesity and the highest rates of illnesses and it’s because of this soul food!” The big monstrous soul food. After I realized that, it pushed me to investigate the history of African American cuisine more and it hit me one day when I was reading this book, The Welcome Table, by this African American food writer/cookbook author/historian Jessica B. Harris, and she said that “African American cuisine or soul food was simply something black people ate for dinner.”
It wasn’t until the 1960s that it was given this term as a way that black activists, living in the urban north, were reclaiming the cuisine as they were reclaiming a number of cultural things that were important to African Americans – so reclaiming soul music or our roots in Africa. [The idea was] this is our food, this is our cuisine. But unfortunately, the popular media picked up on that, and a lot of white journalists only illuminated the more exotic aspects of the cuisine. So when they wrote about it in these different magazines and newspapers, they talk about pig’s feet and the internal viscera of animals. And all these things that are part of the cuisine, but it kind of reduced it to all these interesting things that “the other” was eating. What it made me realize is that what people think about is just a small part of a very complex and rich diverse cuisine that is very rooted in a lot of things food activists say we should embrace in our eating now. Food is as local as a backyard garden, as seasonal as whatever’s in season, and as fresh as being harvested right before the meal.
And when I think about growing up in Memphis and having grandparents that grew up in rural Mississippi, that brought with them this agrarian knowledge and connection to the land and the environment and all this care for the earth that they had to Memphis, which is an urban center, and having this backyard garden that was kind of like an urban farm, and having these all these fruit trees and nut trees in the backyard that was like a mini orchard, and they way that they were harvesting food for our family, and bartering, and sharing with neighbors…you know, in so many of these practices that people are touting as the way we need to move toward for environmental sustainability, the sustainability of our health, these things are part of our cultural heritage and I just wanted to help people remember. I wanted to help African-Americans remember, help the general public remember that this is as much as part of our legacy as it is anyone else’s.
Whoo, that was a lot!
It was great though, and it really does start speaking to these ideas we have ingrained about food and what our own food legacy is. We’ve been examining [cultural ideas around food] and so many of us are sharing these stories about being from a Latino cultural background or a Polish cultural background, and sitting down at the table with our new food beliefs and having our families not understand why we would want to give these things up. They reject some of our food choices because they are interpreting [our rejection of meat or fatty foods] as a rejection of them. In all your work that you’ve done as an eco-chef, what have you uncovered about food in terms of culture and how we relate to each other?
When you talked about diets changing and adapting, it made me think about the way in which African-Americans, like most Americans, saw the globalization of agriculture, the mechanization of agriculture and the industrialization of food over the past three or four decades as a good thing. It’s cheap, it’s fast, it’s convenient – hey, what’s wrong with this? We’re modern and we want to be with the times. And we wholeheartedly embraced this in many ways – not everyone, but we really embraced it. And it’s not just African-Americans. It’s so many people of different backgrounds. When I have been giving talks lately about this issues, it resonates with people from Appalachia, it resonates with immigrants from Latin America, it’s something that is of concern in so many different cultures and communities that in all cases, we need to figure out how can we re-embrace those old ways. How can we get back to the ways that sustained our parents, and our grandparents?
And I think, most importantly, what we’ve lost is our sense of community and sharing and connecting, because that was so embedded and ingrained in all the other things around our food systems and those are things we have to be re-embracing in these next moments, in this period of economic strife and people tightening belts. If we’re going to get through it, I think we really have to think how can we be in relationship with our neighbors and all of these formal and informal kinship networks to help each other?
Let’s circle back to the question I posed before about how we are discussing food in the mainstream media right now. I know that food has become this huge issue and it’s a really hot topic right now. We’ve had all these people publishing books like Mark Bittman and Michael Pollan and we’re talking about food and how it impacts the Earth. I noticed that there are a lot of ideas around guilt. That people should be guilted into eating a certain way or a different way, and I think that’s where there is a lot of disconnect occurring when you try to get people to realize the issues at stake. How would you reframe the conversation?
Yeah, hmmm…
I know, it’s a tough one.
It’s just complex. I feel like I’d have to ruminate on that a bit before I could really give a distinct answer.
Well, feel free to just think about it as we talk, and if you have any thoughts later, feel free to offer them. Another thing that comes up often in these discussions is the role of the poor – and more specifically, the role of the poor as the cause of their own dietary issues. I notice this a lot on larger health blogs, like the one run by the New York Times. There seems to be this idea that the poor eat horrible food because it’s their culture or they just want to. There doesn’t seem to be any real engagement with the barriers and issues that comes with trying to eat in season, and have a healthy diet full of fruit and vegetables that people seem to take for granted that [economically disadvantaged areas] just have equal access to all of these things. Could you talk a little more about that?
One of the biggest things I uncovered in my work, especially working with young people in New York City through the organization I founded called B-healthy, is that a lot of people living in low income areas and urban areas are living in what are known as food deserts. They have very little access to fresh food – healthy, local, sustainable, all that – and have an overabundance of the worst foods, the fried things, the packaged fast food that has a negative impact on their overall health. Lack of access to healthy food is a huge issue, and it’s only one indicator of material deprivation these people are living with. In these neighborhoods, I visited, it wasn’t as if they just lacked access to healthy food and everything else was great. Usually it would be failing infrastructure, dilapidated schools, high levels of illiteracy, low income. So I think it is one issue that has to be addressed of many among these people living in these historically excluded communities are dealing with.
I certainly applaud the efforts of independent organizations – such as the Food Project in Boston, Added Value in Brooklyn, NY, The People’s Grocery in West Oakland, California. The work they are doing is important around creating healthier food systems and educating people in these communities about health food and agricultural issues. And I realized that this moment that we’re in – where we are looking at increased urbanization in the US and globally – we have to be producing more food in cities, we have to be creating more access to local food systems in urban centers, and we cannot rely on these organizations with the express goal of working around these issues to do it. It’s just too much weight for them to carry. There are so many organizations that exist in these same communities that we just described – faith based institutions, community based institutions – that people trust and go to regularly in these communities that have financial capital and land and people, and we want them to really work and help us increase the access [of] and awareness of healthy food, whether it be through community gardens, urban farms, connecting with local farms to bring more food into urban centers. I almost feel like these institutions have to take the lead. I’ve seen well meaning projects that go into low income communities to do work fall flat on their faces because they don’t really have the trust, or they don’t understand the cultural norms of the community. There is some disconnect that is happening, and I feel like it’s almost imperative for the organizations that people trust to work around these issues, and go beyond health fairs and diagnosing the problem.
We know! We know that people in these communities are suffering from the highest rates of obesity and diet related illness. We know that too many of us are dying too early. So what can we do to actually prevent this? What can we do to address it before it gets to the point where we’re just telling people they have six months to live, or they need to start taking all these pharmaceuticals.

TWO TRUCKS AT SLAUGHTERHOUSE SET AFIRE

“Lunes 22 de diciembre 2008
Recordando a ronnie lee…

Thinking of Ronnie Lee . . .
Fire has returned to illuminate the gray night on the outskirts of the large city, our eyes shining against its reflection. Two fires took the monotony out of the empty and sad streets.
While the chicken murderers were resting after the slaughter, our shadows, reflected by the liberators’ abolitionist fire, became visible; two trucks belonging to one of the many slaughterhouses in the City of Nezahualcóyotl, to the east of the city, were set afire.
In one gasoline appeared rose-colored inside the cabin and on the seats and the steering wheel, because we had the good fortune of a window being down, in the other truck liters of gasoline mixed with oil was poured on its tires, and in the transporting box (made of wood), immediately after that it was set on fire using a pair of flares that were thrown at the interior and exterior of the vehicles.
Within minutes our shadows and smiles of happiness were lost in the darkness.
The sabotages continue, we will not stop, each time it is becoming more intense, strong and direct.
Our passion will always be our weapon.
Wait no more, you only need conviction and gasoline for action.

TURTLE FREED FROM CAPTIVITY
reported anonymously:

“December 24:
While the majority of Mexican families were preparing Christmas food and were putting on their expensive costumes purchased only to be used on this brief day and were preparing to receive their families and treat them hypocritically, we the Frente de Liberación Animal – Comando Verde Negro found ourselves on the shores of an enormous lake with a turtle ready to regain her freedom and her wild instincts, denied for many years by anthropocentric speciesism.
This turtle was found in captivity living day after day imprisoned, inert with no companions, until we rescued her from the pathetic and monotonous life that she had been living.
When we saw the large lake, the turtle began kicking her legs as if she remembered life before her capture; we left her on the shore and she quickly, happily submerged herself in the water.
Truly this is what animal liberation is, the always unforgettable rescue and release.
After a period of time underwater admiring the birds that were flying in the blue sky and the rays of the sun, the turtle came out of the water, she saw us for the last time and submerged herself again, to begin a life free and without the domination of her body, her food, and more.
Ready yourself to liberate animals and you will do it!
For total liberation!

POULTRY SHOP CLOSES AFTER ATTACKS
received anonymously:

“During the early morning hours of December 26, the F.L.A. of Mexico decided to visit an exploitive poultry shop that earlier this year had been attacked on several occasions. Before the sabotage we had learned that this store had closed, first because of the debts that they had accumulated in renting the business and the economic crisis and secondly because of the attacks.
We are not economists, but it is clear that small speciesist businesses like this one can easily be closed, in part by the economic crisis currently rocking the wealthy, and also by attacking strongly where they least expect it.
When we arrived at the target, the building was empty and now they surely won’t be selling the corpses of tortured animals again, so we decided to break their windows with hammers and to paint messages such as ‘Animal Liberation!’ expressing our triumph through active and consistent economic sabotage.
Let your imagination free, take to the streets and hit the exploiters where it hurts them the most!

FISH FREED FROM AQUARIUM
anonymous communique:

One year has ended but our instincts for freedom have not, our desire to destroy this world and to see it in chaos by its own means has not been extinguished; the year 2008 came to an end but animal liberation by radical means continues on its course.
This time we had surreptitiously gone to a market where there was a ‘pet’ shop. We cut the canvas that was serving as a wall. There were fish tanks there and we rescued 6 imprisoned fish from their ‘beautiful and well decorated’ prisons.
After the rescue, we continued the liberation at a beautiful lagoon, where the sky was painted by the setting sun of a special day for those imprisoned animals; the sun set, the fish disappeared in the water and our silhouettes faded as the night slowly fell.
The animals are not served by your tears shed in front of photos of them mutilated and murdered; what does interest them is that you rescue them from the hell in which they live; shake the fear and take to the streets to make animal liberation a reality!
Postscript: If the abusers were thinking that it was only last year that had been rocked by actions and that they would have peace now, well they can wait for what we do next!

“PUBLIC COMMUNIQUE
Lima, November 21, 2008.
Individuals for Animal Liberation.
To the civilian community, visual and written press, environmental groups and collectives and individuals that fight for the abolition of Animal, Human and Earth exploitation, we declare the following:
• On Friday, November 21 of this year, in the early morning hours, we carried out a direct action and rescue for Animal Liberation in the Parque Zoológico Huachipa, located in the city of Lima at Km. 9.5 on the central highway in Peru.
• Our actions were directed at smashing animal exploitation, our efforts focused on the direct action of releasing animals and returning them to their natural habitat.
• We consider it necessary to explain what our action consisted of, due to the blockage of information by the Zoo and the news media that have focused all their attention on the APEC meeting in Lima. We entered between Thursday night and the early hours of Friday morning. We cut and opened more than thirty cages
for birds of different species, managing to free more than 50 birds, including Toucans, Owls and other tropical birds and indigenous species of Peru. We also climbed to the top of the mega cage for birds that has been an animal prison, sabotaging its structure with the hope that birds such as parrots, macaws, pigeons, doves, toucans, and white herons locked up in this mega-aviary could find an exit from this life of imprisonment and fly free. Afterwards we were prepared for the most important part of the action, to carry two jungle cats, ocelots, in cages specially suited to them, and to transfer them to their natural habitat; these animals were transported and later released into wild space, the ecosystem of the low jungle of Peru, in order to give them the possibility of a free life far from the harassing looks of tourists, consumers of animal exploitation.
• We believe it necessary to mention and to denounce animal traffickers and zoos and other responsible parties acting as accomplices of state institutions, acquiring animals from the hands of vile traffickers that find no better business than to imprison these free beings in small spaces like those of the animals we freed. These animals were in small cages, groups of up to eight birds per cage, without the ability to fly or interact freely, they were found with clear symptoms of stress caused by the overcrowding, proximity to their natural predators and lack of sunlight. Many of the animals that we freed were found in an area that was off-limits to visitors of the zoo, that was not even on the map of the park, imprisoned in tents, without sunlight and without sufficient space needed to spread out naturally.
• We denounce as well the imprisonment of rodents, turtles, birds and other small animals in plastic containers with the purpose of serving as food for other species; those we found spinning in circles, typical behavior of animals with nervous disorders caused by confinement, the vast majority waiting for utilization later, demonstrating the falsehood and double talk of the companies that work as alleged institutions of preservation and species conservation, who are truly companies of animal exploitation, always operating with speciesist disregard for the interests of the individuals of other species.
• We also denounce the conditions in which the felines that we released were found; they were located in cages of no more than two square meters, side by side, preventing their free exercise of interests and abilities, destroying their instincts and subjecting their wild nature to the egotistic interests of executives who disguise their business of exploitation as conservation. A claim that we denounce as false, due to the conditions of which we were witnesses to when entering this mega animal prison, where animals supposedly in recuperation were kept locked up for display later as objects of entertainment.
• We want to make a call to all collectives and individuals who struggle and are active for Animal, Human and Earth Liberation to act directly towards achieving total liberation, taking into account the interests of those captured under the exploitative hands of owners of zoos, bullfights, animal breeders, the fur industry, meat industry, circuses with animals and an endless number of places of animal exploitation and death; take the necessary security measures, to ensure safe liberations as much for activists as for people not responsible for this imprisonment, like the wage earners in these capitalist companies, also victims of exploitation.
• We want to emphasize as well that liberation through direct action is something we can all be a part of, we do not need special training nor to be part of any organization, just to act with a couple of tools and an attitude open to taking risks in pursuit of the elimination of speciesism and Animal, Human and Earth exploitation, being always clear that race, sex, color, level of intelligence, language, sexual orientation, or in this case species, are not indicators of superiority or inferiority, but individual characteristics. Individuals are deserving of respect on the basis of their own desires and interests, advancing our ethics to a true unfolding of solidarity and egalitarianism.
For Animal, Human and Earth Liberation.
INDIVIDUALS FOR ANIMAL LIBERATION
Until we are all free…”

THREE DUCKS RESCUED

The Catholic church is one of the most cowardly and manipulative institutions that anthropocentric human existence has had, that justifies the murderous speciesism that plagues all animal species today, with the prostituted writings of its book called the Bible.
In Mexico, many people’s beliefs tend toward Catholic fanaticism, for many years the priests have almost completely destroyed the instincts of wild freedom, replacing them with religious moral monotony and the fear of ’spiritual hell,’ many of these fanatic people are capable of the very worst in order to defend their dogmatic positions and their ‘holy’ churches, but we the Frente de Liberación Animal – Comando Verde Negro wanted to confront this threat so in the evening of the date indicated we cut a fence that had protected one of the many churches in Mexico State which had imprisoned some animals and we managed to rescue 3 ducks that surely would have been tortured and killed by these religious bastards.
After their rescue we transported the ducks to their natural habitat, where they can now enjoy their freedom without bars and without poor treatment, where they can swim and eat what they need.
Take a risk, dare yourself, and you will achieve animal liberation!

Animal liberation continues on its course; this time the Frente de Liberación Animal–Comando Verde Negro– it made no difference that the owner of the property could catch us in the act– arrived at a room which had confined two puppies. The small room was in a bad state and the animals were very hungry, a large padlock with a big chain kept the door closed, behind which the dogs barked. We analyzed all possible entries to rescue these animals; we folded the laminate door down and got through to rescue them.
The dogs are now living happily in their new homes, where they will be respected without anthropocentrist treatment and other abuses.

FULL COMMUNIQUE FROM ELF ACTION AT UNIVERSITY

anonymous communique:
English:
“Complete communique of the action of January 29:
In the early morning of January 29, the submissive firefighters in Mexico City (D.F.) quelled a fire within the premises of the College of Sciences and Humanities south campus (CCH Sur) of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). There a machine which destroys the Earth was left forever unusable, and the administration offices of the campus were burned.
The Frente de Liberación de la Tierra (ELF) claimed this attack through a contact; we were informed that the university had been destroying a large part of the ecological reserve where a so-called ‘education’ center is being built, several varieties of trees and diverse plants were cut down, considered to be in the way of their ability to expand their facilities, and their mastery over nature; the progress and education that they extol in their classrooms is always based on domination and anthropocentrism. In this act by the UNAM, it is more than clear that not only do they wish to dominate and mold the minds of students, they also seek to expand the same control over the land and the animals that inhabit her. That’s why the destructive machine was burned, and why we also decided to set a fire on campus, now an indisputable part of the ecocide that education implements, which only wants to produce people who are submissive to authority and power; they create beings who are unable to think and act for themselves and are only educated to produce and consume.
The mass media of miscommunication, which hid the machine which had been burned, only now announced that part of the administrative offices had been burned, and that this had been caused by Porro (shock groups) [groups organized to discredit student movements]; we want to make clear that the ELF/FLT is not composed of such people, who are sent by their bosses to do absurd and meaningless things; our reasons are clear, as we struggle for total liberation (animal, land and human), and if anything blocks us we will face it until its complete destruction and elimination.
We know that the estimated damage of this action was thousands of pesos, but still we are not satisfied with that, and we will continue making war on all that oppresses us and will not allow us all to be happy– us, animals and the land.
This was just a little message, for those who profit at the expense of the destruction and domination of the ecosystem.
ELF/FLT México”

RIOT AT BULLRING
anonymous communique:

“During the demonstration on February 5 (the date on which the bullfighters celebrate the anniversary of the largest bullring in Mexico) various direct action groups demonstrated that the radical movement for total liberation is growing day by day.
The riots began when police attempted to arrest one of the activists; after getting away from the police ring, the walls of the arena were stained with red, black, green and other colors of paint thrown in glass bottles; the windshields of bullfighter’s cars were smashed by stones and sticks; ‘Shitty speciesists!’ was painted on one of the arena’s great walls; the walls of the square shook with the roar of a large homemade bomb, excrement was hurled at a barbecue that was being held by animal torture sympathizers; one of those anthrocentric bastards was physically attacked; there was a small clash between activists and the repressive police force; much later in the bullfighting museum their ‘beautiful’ decorations were attacked, smelly rotten fruit was thrown into the building and stones were thrown at one of the imbeciles dominating the earth and its inhabitants.
At the conclusion of the demonstration, 13 activists had been arrested and deprived of their liberty, so it is because of this that in this communique we express our full solidarity and support.

FLAMING BARRICADE BLOCKS HIGHWAY
anonymous report:
English:
“We have blocked a major highway in Mexico State with a barricade made by the Luddites Against Domestication of Wild Nature. The fire lit up the dark night of peace and tranquility for those people who carry in large trucks ‘raw materials’ extracted directly from the earth. The chaos was again before the eyes of the police who arrived on the scene to put out the incendiary fiesta.
We break their precious social order with our wild, insurgent and radical methods of struggle.”

“On Thursday night, the 12th of this month, we once again visited the murderous ‘Mendele’ leather corporation in Mexico City (D.F.).
This time we painted slogans such as: skin = death, and a message for one of the owners: ‘Aaron, you are in the sights of these f.l.a.’; we also sealed the lock on the front door.
If Mendele does not stop murdering animals, the f.l.a. will stop them our way, the only, necessary way to ensure animal liberation.

FREEDOM FOR TWO HENS

anonymous report:

English:
“In the early morning hours of February 17, FLA-CVN activists went out for a nighttime stroll against speciesists. When the repressive Mexico State ’security’ discovered us, we got rid of the tools to carry out our action. They thought that this would prevent us from reaching our objective, but they were wrong!
When we were leaving the filthy station, we went with more rage and more of a yearning for freedom for two hens who had been discovered imprisoned, dominated and deprived of their liberty in a church. The rescue was a little difficult without the tools that would have helped us, but we had enough conviction and courage to overcome the small impediment. We broke a fence that separated the birds from their freedom and we left along with them under the light of a beautiful moon.
Now this pair of hens enjoy complete freedom without having to endure the domination of the church or any other human being.
This is a message for all those who want to suppress the desire for freedom; if they put walls in our way we will jump them, if they catch us we will get away, and if they block our path we will knock them down!
Neither the security cameras, nor the police, nor the speciesists can stop us! This is not over yet, the fire continues to expand each time there is more… fire to all that oppresses us!!!!

ELF TORCH EARTH-DESTROYING MACHINES
received anonymously:

“Urban expansion is one of the biggest ecological problems, with roads being built over fertile land comes loads of consequences such as pollution, warming of the ground with excessive heat, massive felling of trees, etc. The expansion of civilization and its unnecessary technology leaves the world in the hands of the powerful who control the repressive state apparatus ready to stop any kind of resistance that is put in front of them to halt their run of destruction.
It is for this reason that on the night of February 22 we of the ELF decided to go out at night in Mexico State and set fire to a machine that destroys the earth and a truck owned by the dominators.
We say it once again, there will be no mercy until the abolition of all that oppresses us.

19 SECONDS OF SOCIAL WAR
anonymous communique:

English:
“Capitalism is the principal cause of the destruction of plant and animal life on this planet, the oppressor and murderer of wild life, exploiter of people, animals and the environment for the benefit of the powerful and the corporations; in Mexico war is declared.
So many hectares of forests and jungles are cleared for the sole purpose of building centers for shopping and tourism, over the dead bodies of the trees and animals they build shopping malls, banks, golf courses, hunting lodges, hotels, all reserved for a small group of filthy capitalists so that they can enrich the base of exploitation.
They deceive the people, saying that this ‘progress’ will bring more employment; some give in, others resist but in the end are murderers in the place where they were born, where they grew up, where they live.
It can not continue like this!
The powerful have to feel our fury at their properties, in their corporations, in their cars, and even in their own houses; we need to torment them, to remind them of the shit that they do day by day to this beautiful planet where we live, to remind them that while they are sleeping peacefully there are many people who are suffering and surviving the hardships of this system.
For these reasons and more we claim the following sabotages:
Tuesday, March 10, 2009:
- A harmless acid bomb was detonated in a well-to-do area in Mexico City.
- 8 windows at a K.F.C. were smashed.
- The windows and a security camera of a bank were smashed.
The video is called: ‘19 seconds of social war’ and in it we try to show how much can be done in a few seconds of our lives to break with the reality of oppression and exploitation, for a few short seconds, to feel the adrenaline of abolition, for a few moments carrying out the fight against the state and capital.
Social war is not a joke or a fad, but a reality in constant development and growth.
Social war is inevitable.
Eco-anarchist cell for direct attack.

BUTCHERS SABOTAGED
anonymous communique:
a ninguna.
English:
“On the first night of the weekend that just past, in the filthy city of
Santiago, we encountered 2 large butchers to which we wanted to
give our contribution and make the work of these murderers more difficult;
we decided to do something easy and which would take us very little time.
Taking whatever materials with which we could plug the locks on the
padlocks, we approached our target. The first butcher had 4
padlocks on the front door which were used to open all the metal shutters
from the inside (that were like 3 shutters); after plugging the locks well
we adorned the walls of the premises writing ‘meat is death’
and ‘murderers’. The second butcher was larger, this had a
front door (with a lock and 2 padlocks) where the murderers
enter and 5 metal shutters (7 padlocks in total); after plugging
all the padlocks and the door lock we painted on the door of the building
‘murderers’ and ‘FLA’.
On the 2nd night of the weekend and with a little superglue in
our pockets, we went to another butcher; this one had two
metal shutters and a total of 8 padlocks which we plugged with pieces
of metal and superglue; we also graffitied on the walls
‘murderers’ and ‘(A)’. The following day the meat market did not open their
shutters …
Plugging locks, breaking windows, leaving a message, etc. is very
simple, but that does not make it less important… we know that
actions like these are carried out and it is not the first time that we have done it,
but this is the first time that we claimed it through a communique,
because we realized we were making a mistake in not doing so.
It is important to claim an action …
We do not believe in a hierarchy of actions, like believing that the action
that produces the most damage is the most important or that releasing an animal is nothing in comparison to the liberation of thousands of animals. What is important is to smash the fear and to dare to carry out sabotage against the oppressors, because they will not stop exploiting through the power of ‘convincing’ and the form of pacifism that some believe in.
A small review of what is happening with our friends in Mexico is enough, where in the beginning communiques were read describing graffiti and breaking windows and now the burning of machinery, attacks against the police and the liberation of animals. More people will see that direct action is a practical and effective method in the fight against exploitation.
Words are worth little if they are not coupled with action.
Propaganda by deed is necessary. Our fight against power will only end
with its destruction.
We send a friendly greeting to all those who fight against exploitation,
whatever type without exclusion and without giving more significance to anyone.
For the destruction of what oppresses us, war against exploitation!

NIGHT OF SABOTAGE
anonymous communique:
publicaciones, expropiando, lanzando piedras, prendiendo barricadas,
rompiendo vitrinas, incendiando y poniendo bombas.

During the night of Saturday 21, we climbed on our bikes and headed out
to sabotage the work of exploiters. In our bags we carried pieces of (previously
cut) metal to put in locks and padlocks, superglue and 2 spray paint cans.
A bank branch was our first target, with much superglue and metal we sealed the slot where the card is inserted to open the door to the ATM room. On the door of the bank we painted ‘closed’ and ‘(A)’.
Then we went to a fast food restaurant where we sealed 2 padlocks, and at
the entrance painted ‘meat = death.’
The third goal was a large butcher shop located on a very busy corner,
where we sealed the 6 padlocks and one of us tried to pass the gate to leave a
message on the big white wall, but had to flee when a police patrol got close.
After exiting the site without causing suspicion we painted all the walls
that we found with messages such as ‘political prisoners to the street’,
‘March 29 in protest!’, ‘Light the fuse (A)’, and we also painted over a mural
of the communist party where we crossed out their disgusting hammer and sickle; we also wrote ‘politicians to the stake’.
Finally we went to another butcher shop where we sealed the 4 padlocks on the 2 doors and we painted ‘murderers’.
Sabotage against capital and the murderers will continue, we will not settle
for just talk, direct action is a method of attack against those who have commodified our lives and those of our animal brethren.
We believe in the ‘here and now,’ we will not wait for an idealized moment to
act, we will attack with everything we have in our hands.
From behind the anonymity of the actions we are sending a big rebel hug to those who dare to break with this reality, using publications, expropriating,
throwing stones, setting barricades on fire, smashing shop windows, burning and making bombs.
And for those who seek pacificism, victimization and movement of the
‘masses’ and have tried all forms of trampling over the subversive actions,
they know they are our enemies and how they will be treated!
destroy authority, its supporters and false critics!
